[Also in Division C7] A siliceous substance is incorporated in a corrosive oxidizing acid medium to which the surface of titanium or titanium-alloy parts are exposed at temperatures above 100‹C. so as to deposit on such parts a protective siliceous layer. The substance added may be inorganic e.g. elementary silicon, iron silicide, silica. quartz powder, sodium or calcium silicate, glass powder, asbestos powder or kaolin, silicon tetrachloride, trichlorosilane or disiloxane (SiH 3 ) 2 O, or organic e.g. silicone oils. Volatile silicone compounds also protect parts exposed only to the vapour phase of the corrosive liquid. Mixtures of different compounds may be used. Small amounts may be added continuously during the exposure to the corrosive agent.
