Abstract: Vinyl phosphonic acid bis (beta-chloroethyl) ester is prepared by heating beta-chloroethyl phosphonic acid bis (beta-chloroethyl) ester with an organic acid salt of alkaline reaction. It is found that hydrogen chloride is eliminated preferentially from the chloroethyl group attached directly to the phosphorus atom. Suitable salts are the sodium, potassium or ammonium salts of acetic, propionic, butyric and isobutyric acids, mixtures of these salts may also be used. The reactants are heated, preferably in an atmosphere of nitrogen or carbon dioxide, to a temperature in the range 90 DEG -140 DEG C. preferably 110 DEG -130 DEG C. The reaction may be carried out in an inert solvent such as dioxane, o-dichlorbenzene or tetrahydronaphthalene. The organic salt added in sufficient quantity to ensure that there is between 1 and 2 moles of salt per mole of the phosphonic acid compound. In examples the phosphonic acid compound is heated with (1) sodium acetate in dioxane, (2) sodium propionate, (3) potassium acetate, (4) and (5) sodium acetate in o-dichlorbenzene.
