Abstract: 1346977 Tricyclic ketones F HOFFMANNLA ROCHE & CO AG 10 Nov 1972 [12 Nov 1971] 52025/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] The invention comprises compounds of general Formula Ia or Ib wherein R 1 , R 7 , and R 8 are hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl or C 1 -C 6 alkoxy groups; R 2 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl or C 2 -C 6 alkenyl; R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen or C 1 -C 6 alkyl, R 5 and R 6 are C 1 -C 6 alkyl and the bonds indicated # may be single or double bonds. The compounds of the invention may be prepared by (a) heating a compound of the general Formula II or by (b) for the manufacture of tricyclic ketones in which at least one of the ring situated double bonds is hydrogenated, hydrogenating a tricyclic ketone of Formula Ia or Ib which contains at least one ring situated double bond, in the presence of a noble-metal catalyst. Compounds of Formula II are prepared by reacting the sodium salt of a phenol of general Formula III with a compound of general Formula IV in which X is a leaving group, e.g. Cl, Br, I, arylsulphonyloxy or alkylsulphonyloxy.
