    Abstract: A magnetostrictive record and playback head is disclosed which utilizes an acoustic wave (23) travelling along the surface (11) of piezoelectric material (10) so as to distort the surface thereof and to change the stress in a layer of magnetostrictive material (30, 50) along that surface at a point which depends upon the position of the travelling acoustic wave. At the point where the magnetostrictive material (30, 50) is changed, the material is magnetic so that a pulse in an adjacent conductor (40) will cause a flux to form that can deposit a magnetic signal on adjacent magnetic tape (70) (Fig. 1).

    Abstract: An acoustic transducer includes a housing (18) having means (22) for dispersing internal reflections within the housing to minimize the incidence of such internally reflected acoustic pulses on the transducer (14) itself, thereby avoiding the generation of spurious electrical signals for transmission to the translating circuitry. In one embodiment the operating end of the housing includes stepped annular surfaces (24) which provide sharp angles of incidence to the internal reflections to direct them away from the transducer (14).
