    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a code word generator, whose confidentiality is increased by lowering the possibility of detection of a code by a third party in a system in which the code is used. SOLUTION: The code word generator is provided with a first mixed an ergodic converter 24 to receive decimal extension of irrational number extended by a decimal extending device 20, a rounding down device to round down the complex number sequence to predetermined length and to form a first code word by the complex number sequence, which is rounded off and a replacing device 28 constituted to replace the complex number sequence which is rounded off and to return the replace complex number sequence to the rounding off device. And the replaced sequence is rounded off and a ground of code words is generated in the rounding off device 30.

    Abstract: A codeword generator produces codewords in the form of digital electronic signals which may be employed, for example, in spread spectrum communications system or RADAR systems. The generator effects a mixing ergodic transformation upon a suitable irrational number to produce a complex number sequence. The generator truncates the complex number sequence to a predetermined length, thus forming a codeword. The generator then forms other codewords within a family by permuting this first codeword. Other families of codewords may be generated by employing another mixing ergodic transform to transform the same irrational number or another suitable irrational number.

    Abstract: A reconfigurable optical beam splitter (2) and method establishes replicated periods of optical phase shift regions across a liquid crystal cell (2) to form an optical grating in the liquid crystal. A non-linear pattern of phase shift regions is established within each period of the grating to split an input beam (16) into a multi-beam output (18a, 18b, 18c), or to combine multiple input beams (18a, 18b, 18c) into a single output beam (16). The desired pattern of phase shift regions is established by applying corresponding voltage differentials across the cell, between an electrode array (4) on one side of the cell and a common counter electrode on the other side. The voltage differential pattern can be dynamically changed to impart a corresponding dynamic reconfiguration of the output beam pattern. The most efficient voltage differential pattern for any particular output is established by initially selecting a tentative voltage differential pattern, determining the optical efficiency of the processing method with the tentative pattern, and then applying a non-linear optimization algorithm to derive a voltage differential pattern that corresponds to a maximum optical efficiency.
