    Abstract: A continuous strip coating machine has top (18) and bottom (13) applicator rolls and a backup roll (12) adjacent the top applicator roll (18). A lift roll (38) to lift the strip (10) and thus vary the angle of wrap of strip (10) about the bottom applicator roll (13) is provided. The use of lift roll (38) in turn varies the pressure between strip (10) and roll (13) and thus the thickness of the coating applied to the strip bottom. Thickness may be measured indirectly by measuring the pressure of the strip (10) on the roll (13). Thickness may also be measured directly. Oscillations of the strip (10) in a drying oven (14) may also be sensed and compensated for. Feedback control is used with thickness measuring techniques to control coating thickness by varying angle of wrap, relative speed between the roll (13) and strip (10), and/or nip pressure between roll (13) and transfer roll (28) that transfers coating material to the roll (13).

    Abstract: A powder coating line (22) for coating either coiled strip (60) or pre-sheared and punched blanks (114) is provided. In order to coat strip (60), a catenary portion of the strip is suspended through a powder coating subsystem (20) which includes a powder coating booth (52) and a curing oven (54). The coated strip is then recoiled onto a rewind reel (38). In the alternative, the strip may be stopped and sheared at an input region (63) and presheared blanks (114) introduced to the powder coating subsystem (20). The blanks (114) are placed on a belt conveyor (118), which transports them into the powder coating booth (52). The blanks (114) are then passed in a conveyor (122) through the powder coating booth (52) and oven (54) for subsequent restacking. After passing out of the oven (54), and before coiled or stacking occurs, the strip or blanks pass through a quench (56) and an air dryer (112). The powder coating subsystem (20) can be incorporated into a larger pre-treating, cleaning, embossing or post-processing line (22).

    Abstract: A method of operation of a twin roll casting apparatus (40) to produce thin gauge sheet metal at high-production rates. The method includes simultaneously adjusting various operating parameters, such as the roll speed, tip position, roll gap, molten metal input temperature and exit strip (46) tension.     Abstract: A parting agent spray system (30) for use with a roll casting machine (10) to reduce the parting problems associated with releasing the casting-strip from the rolls (12, 14). The parting system comprises a bank (39) of self-cleaning spray nozzles (42) for each of the upper roll (12) and the lower roll (14) of the caster. Each bank (39) of nozzles (42) is enclosed in its own individual housing (44) which terminates proximal to the surface of the roll, and is movably located on a track. The housing (44) is utilized to contain any excess graphite spray and prevent it from escaping from the area around the roll caster and contaminating the surrounding environment. The nozzles (42) are grouped into zones (40), each zone connected to a parting agent solution source via an influent parting agent solution line (87), and connected to an air source via an air supply line (56) for controlling the flow of the parting agent solution through each of the nozzles and atomizing the same, thus allowing the nozzles in each zone to be independently manipulated. Finally, each housing (44) surrounding the nozzles (42) is connected to a cyclone separator (118) for removing the excess parting agent from the housing which has not been applied to said roll of the roll caster so as to eliminate contamination of the external environment with the excess parting agent. The excess parting agent which is extracted from the housing (44) is separated out by the cyclone separator (118) and contained for reuse.

    Abstract: The local thickness across a cast sheet (36) is regulated in a twin roll casting machine (20) upon control of the crown of the work rolls by providing differential cooling in a plurality of cooling subsystems (68, 72, 74, 76, 78) along the length of the rolls. The work rolls (32) contain inlet and outlet water plenums (74, 72) which are connected to peripheral cooling channels (68) between a core (48) and an outer shell (46) of each roll. Water flow to the cooling subsystems is controlled by a movable sleeve (62) within the outlet plenum (72). In a first position of the sleeve (62), water is permitted to flow through all areas of the work rolls (32) providing an even heat removal. In a second position, a greater portion of water flows through cooling subsystems in the center portion of the work rolls (32) resulting in increased removal of heat from the center area of the core (48), the temperature in this area, and thus the crown of the work roll. The sleeve (62) in each roll (32) may be moved incrementally to provide incremental control over the size of the work roll crowns and the resulting crown of the sheet (36) produced by the rolls.
