    Abstract: A magnetic recording medium has a base film, a magnetic layer provided on one surface of the base film and a back coat layer provided on the other surface of the base film. To provide a back coat layer with a low friction coefficient combined with high smoothness, this layer comprises graphitized carbon black powder and a binder therefor. The graphitized carbon black powder may have an average particle size of 20 to 200 mp and typically has a graphitized layer at the surface of each particle, the thickness of the graphitized layer being from 5 to 50% of the particle size.
