Abstract: A control mechanism for transporting registration cards, selectively activatable, comprising: a means of transporting registration cards, activatable with movement from a first to a second position to transport a registration card; a magnetic control means comprising a core member, a frame member and a coil member; means for coupling said armor member to said registration card transport means; means for cyclically varying the relative position between said coil member, said core member and said armature member, so that the attraction of said armature can take place at only one point of said cycle; and means for activating or selectively exciting said coil member in the sense of coupling said core member to said armature member, by effect of the magnetic attraction force, the first time said core member moves to reach said point. Of the cycle, to control the movement of said means of transport of registration cards. (Machine-translation by Google Translate, not legally binding)

Abstract: 1,168,579. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 8 May, 1968 [20 June, 1967], No. 21681/68. Heading B6F. [Also in Division G4] In a printer in which type members 14 are arranged for movement along a print line through a plurality of spaced print positions 22 and print hammers 12 are selectively actuatable to effect an impression, each hammer extends over a plurality of print positions and each hammer face includes a plurality of striking regions 28 corresponding to the print positions spanned by the hammer, the striking regions being separated by non-striking regions, and the type members 14 are spaced by a distance less than the span of a hammer and such that at any time only one type member can be disposed in a print position before each hammer. The type members 14 are formed on flexible fingers (32), Fig. 1, not shown, joined in groups at their bases to form type segments. Each type segment is removably attached to a chain (10) which is driven by a motor (not shown) through sprocket wheels (30). The hammers 12 are held in an inoperative position by an electromagnet energized by a coil (24), Figs. 2, 3, not shown, and released by energizing opposing coils (26). The magnets are actuated in response to an electrical circuit in which the position of a type element is compared with a character to be printed, a coincidence causing timed actuation of a corresponding hammer.
