Abstract: A planographic printing surface capable of simultaneously printing more than one color is produced from light sensitive plates including at least one conductive metal layer by selectively exposing the light sensitive portion of the plate, developing the light exposed portions, removing either the exposed or nonexposed light sensitive portions, and then, as required, electrolytically coating, etching, or further exposing the portions of the plate thus revealed. Successive applications of this technique may be made. The process results in a planographic printing surface with portions which have differing surface energies and which portions are therefore susceptible to selective wetting by various colored inks having differing surface energies. Inking of the thus produced surface with inks which selectively wet specific portions of the surface, followed by bringing the surface into contact with a to-be-printed article results in a multicolor print in a single pass. In preferred printing processes, the various inks having varying surface energies are mutually nonmiscible with one another.

Abstract: A thermoplastic material comprises a copolymer of (a) 65-82 mole per cent of a styrene of formula where Rx is H, a methyl or methoxy radical and x is 0, 1 or 2, with (b) 18-35 mole per cent of at least one methacrylate of formula where R1 is a C1- 22 alkyl, C7- 22 aralkyl or C7- 22 phenoxyalkyl radical, the copolymer having a number average molecular weight of less than 7000. The copolymer may comprise (a) styrene or vinyl toluene and (b) methyl, ethyl, n-butyl, n-hexyl, n-decyl, stearyl and/or octadecyl methacrylates and may contain o-terphenyl as plasticizer. The copolymer may be produced by heating a solution of the monomers and a catalyst (#c,#c1-azodi-isobutyronitrile), e.g. in toluene, in the absence of oxygen and recovering the precipitated copolymer, e.g. by addition of methanol. The copolymers may be dissolved in benzene and used to coat a substrate to form a recording element.ALSO:A recording element has a substrate coated with a layer of a thermoplastic material comprising a copolymer of a) 65-82 mole % of a styrene of formula where Rx is H1 a methyl or methoxy radical and x is 0, 1 or 2, with b) 18-35 mole % of at least one methacrylate of formula where R1 is a C1-22 alkyl, C7-22 aralkyl or C7-22 phenoxy alkyl radical, the copolymer having a number average molecular weight of less than 7,000. The substrate may be of glass or may be flexible, e.g. of polyethylene terephthalate or of polycarbonate resin. The thermoplastic composition and substrate may be both optically clear and the substrate may be coated with a transparent conductive layer, e.g. of tin oxide or chromium.

Abstract: 1,108,067. Modulated light. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. 6 Aug., 1965 [2 Sept., 1964], No. 33696/65. Heading H4F. [Also in Division G2] A process for recording information in the form of surface deformations in a polymeric thermoplastic material comprises applying to a surface of the material an electrostatic charge pattern having a field intensity distribution representative of information required to be recorded, the thermoplastic material being of such a nature that its surface is spontaneously deformable at room temperature upon application of the electrostatic charge pattern. These polymers either have a glass transition temperature (g.t.t.) below room temperature, or are copolymers of at least two monomers whose homopolymers have a g.t.t., (1) below and (2) above room temperature respectively, or are polymers which have been degraded to have a g.t.t. below room temperature, or, finally, include a compatible plasticizer to so reduce the g.t.t. long lists of all these are given. Backing material for the recording material may be either a flexible composition or a rigid inflexible material, polyethylene terephthate, polycarbonate resins, glass, unsaturated polyester resins and metal being specified. A conducting layer may be deposited between the thermoplastic surface and the backing so as to aid the erasure step. In a typical example, (1) a styrene-isoprene copolymer mixed with a terphenyl is deposited on a polyethylene terephthate film and the film placed on an etched stainless steel electrical ground plane whose pattern consists of a grid network of lines with a line density of 250 lines per inch. The composition is charged by a corona discharge to 1300 v., the charged film turned over, insulated from ground by inch air, and charged oppositely to the same voltage, the deformations then appearing.
