Abstract: A toner usage sensing system for an electrostatic reproduction apparatus which utilizes multicomponent developer material including electrostatically charged toner to develop electrostatic latent images on a photosensitive plate directly senses the amount of toner consumed by the reproduction process. Since the average toner body charge (coulomb/gram) is constant for a given desired toner concentration, the weight of the electrostatically charged toner consumed in sensed by measuring the charge removed from the developer material during the reproduction process. The developer unit containing the developer material is electrically isolated from the remainder of the reproduction apparatus and grounded through a single connection. The current in the ground connection returns charge to the developer unit sufficient to replace the charge removed and is sensed to obtain a measurement of the toner consumed. A measured amount of toner is added to the developer material when a preselected amount of charge has been sensed as being removed. In one embodiment, a DC motor drives the toner replenisher and rotates an amount proportional to the sensed current thereby providing a mechanical storage of the incremental amounts of toner removed on widely spaced reproduction runs.

Abstract: A corona and associated electrical drive as shown herein, neutralize the static charges on non-conductive sheets or webs. The neutralization of static charge is accomplished by passing the material to be neutralized under a double wire corona. Both wires in the corona are connected to an AC signal. The AC signal drives both wires with a signal that alternates in polarity at frequency f. The wires are spaced apart a predetermined distance calculated from a function dependent upon the frequency of the AC signal and the speed of the paper moving under the corona wires. The predetermined distance is such that a given area of the paper will pass under one wire at a first polarity and under the second wire at the opposite polarity. Further enhancement of neutralization can be accomplished by using a second double wire corona out of phase with the first double wire corona. In addition the sheet or web as it passes under the corona wires is supported to prevent static charge on the support from balancing a static charge on the sheet or web. Accordingly, the only static charge present as the sheet or web moves under the corona is that charge carried by the sheet or web. The corona wires will neutralize that charge either by discharging it with oppositely charged ions or depositing oppositely charged ions to balance the charge already on the sheet or web. Thus as the sheet or web moves away from the neutralizing station the sheet or web has a net charge which is substantially zero.

Abstract: 1411198 Cleaning xerographic apparatus INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 7 Dec 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 56807/73 Heading G2H Charged toner particles 51, 52 are removed from the surface 11 of a xerographic drum by a wiper band formed from a compliant material having a resistivity not greater than 10 8 ohm centimetres that is moved in a closed loop to wipe the surface 11, while a cleaner device removes from the band particles transferred thereto and an electric current is applied to the band proportional to the image charge of the particles in contact therewith. The band may form the outer layer 35 of a roller 31 having a metal core 37 and a compliant foam layer 39, or it may be a belt 75 Figs. 3 and 4 respectively. The cleaner device may comprise a scavenger roller 41, Fig. 3, or a scraper blade 43, Fig. 4. The current supply source 47 may consist of a connection to earth where the toner particles 51, 52 are of mixed polarity, e.g. where they have been subjected to an A.C. pre-clean corona, but preferably the particles are subjected to a positive pre-clean corona and the current source 47 is at a low negative D.C. potential. The outer layer 35 of the roller 31 may be a carbon filler silicone rubber, or conductive forms of neoprene, polyurethane or ethylene/propylene copolymer. The specification also discloses suitable developer compositions for magnetic brush development of latent images on the xerographic drum.
