    Abstract: JUSTIFICATION OF OVERSTRUCK TEXT Overstruck text is justified by distributing the white space residue at the end of the unjustified line among the interword spaces for justification. The amount of the residue distributed is used to determine a number of overstrike characters which will overstrike the text including these expanded interword spaces. This is accomplished by placing controls in the text stream during editing to delineate the text to be overstruck. Before printing, these controls in the edited data stream are detected to cause the print line to be first justified by expansion of interword spaces and then followed by overstriking with the appropriate number of overstrike characters determined during the justification process.

    Abstract: A WORD PROCESSING SYSTEM BASED ON A DATA STREAM HAVING INTEGRATED ALPHANUMERIC AND GRAPHIC DATA A word processing system is provided with an interactive display terminal for displaying by character generation a data stream representative of alphanumeric characters to be printed on a document together with means for printing the characters on the document. The processing system integrates into the data stream, data representative of graphics and converts such integrated graphic data into graphic display characters whereby the graphics may also be displayed through character generation. When printing of the graphics and alphanumeric information to produce documents is required, the data in the data stream representative of alphanumeric characters is applied to the printing means resulting in the printing of the characters and the data in the data stream representative of the graphics is applied to apparatus for producing the graphics such as a plotter to produce the graphic content of the document.

    Abstract: JUSTIFYING WITH PRINTER LEVEL DATA STREAM WHICH ACCOMMODATES FOOTERS AND HEADERS In order to avoid the problem of the last line of the body text not being justified when it is not the end of a paragraph but is followed by a footer, a converter/processor (13) is provided to modify the print data stream produced by another converter/processor (12) from the revisable or editable text data stream. If during conversion from the revisable data stream to the print data stream a "last body text line" is found and it is not the end of a paragraph, a latch (34) is set. Then, with each line of print data stream text, the latch is checked, and if the latch is set and the text line ends with a carriage return, the carriage return is replaced with a zero-index-carriage return and an index. These act similar to a carriage return in all cases except one - the text line which they terminate may now be justified.

    Abstract: PRINTER SHARING BY PLURALITY OF DISPLAY UNITS IN WORD PROCESSING SYSTEM The present disclosure relates to word processing systems wherein material to be printed is formatted on a display unit having a display, e.g., CRT display and a text formatting processor which formats the display material. The display unit further includes means for controlling a printer to print the formatted text. In the present invention a plurality of such display units share a printer. This is accomplished by having at least one of the display units comprise means for controlling the sharing of the printer by the plurality of display units and each of the other display units communicate with the printer through these printer sharing control means. At least part of this printer sharing control means is contained in the text formatting processor of the primary display unit through which the other display units communicate with the printer.     Abstract: CHARACTER SET EXPANSION A method of, and system for, increasing the number of characters available to be printed with a single print element. If a printer is printing from storage and the character being presented to the printer does not match the print element in use, a determination is made as to whether the character is in fact available on the element. If so, the character is caused to be printed. If not, a determination is made as to whether the presented character can be constructed from characters existing on the print element. If so, construction is caused to occur to avoid a print element change. If, however, the presented character does not exist on the print element and cannot be constructed from characters that do exist on the print element, a requirement for a print element change is signalled. Following a change, printing will continue with the new print element as long as characters are available, or can be constructed from available characters. As such, throughput is improved and required operator attention is diminished. AT9-80-034

    Abstract: SYSTEM AND PRINTER JUSTIFICATION SYSTEM A system for first justifying a text line according to a system minimum escapement unit, and then rejustifying the line according to a minimum escapement unit for a printer which is to be utilized in printing the line. The first justification of the line is in a normal manner. That is, any residue is divided by the number of word spaces on the line to obtain a quotient and any remainder. The extent of word space expansion is then the value of the quotient plus the remainder until exhausted. Rejustification for the printer being utilized is accomplished by dividing each system justified word space size by the printer minimum escapement unit to obtain a new quotient and remainder. Each system justified word space is then converted to a value including the obtained quotient for each space, and the remainders for all spaces are accumulated for adding to the first word space.
