Abstract: 1,043,946. Television. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. May 28, 1965 [June 30, 1964], No. 22663/65. Heading H4F. [Also in Division G4] A pattern scanner comprises a two-dimension optic-to-acoustic converter 7, Fig. 2B (not shown), arranged to have its surface traversed by a raster of acoustic signals the amplitudes of which are modified by light falling on the surface, the image of the pattern 5 being projected on to the surface at the instant the raster of acoustic signals is properly positioned on the surface, and the acoustic signals being converted to a series of electric signals. The converter 7 is formed of a piezo-electric material and the acoustic signals are generated by a transducer 11 supplied with electric pulses. Each acoustic pulse traverses the surface of converter 7 and is reflected from the opposite side so as to make 20 scans. 3 megacycle pulse generator 9, Fig. 2A (not shown), provides pulses which are formed into 20 trains of fifteen pulses by gates controlled by counters. The 20 trains are designed to fill the 20 scan lines 25 but not the fly-back lines 26. The set of pulse trains is preceded by a pulse of larger magnitude which, when converted to an electric signal by transducer 13, is detected by a threshold device 79 and fires lamp 1 at the instant the 20 acoustic trains of 15 pulses are correctly positioned along the 20 scan lines. The light image falling on the surface attenuates corresponding acoustic pulses so that, when they arrive at the transducer 13, attenuated signals are produced. After the lamp 1 has flashed the surface is returned to normal condition by a quench lamp 19 actuated by the same pulse as lamp 1, but delayed at 17. The pulses from transducer 13 are amplified at 77, sampled by narrow, shaped pulses in gate 81 and applied through a summing circuit 87 to two gates 89, 91. The gate 89 is open and passes the pulse trains back to the input transducer 11 through a summing circuit 75 so that the whole pattern including the leading triggering pulse re-circulates through the converter, the lamp being flashed again, further to attenuate the pulses. This is repeated. A counter 47 responds after the third circulation through the converter to close gate 89, preventing further circulation and open gate 91 to pass the signal trains to a threshold circuit 95 which converts the signals to binary form to provide scan signals at the output 97. Storing.-If switch 99 is in the other position, flip-flop 101 is set to open gate 103 so that the binary signal trains pass back to the input of converter 11. The lamp is not operated in this operation so that the signals recirculate indefinitely. Alternative application.- Instead of repeatedly using the same pattern, different patterns may be flashed on to the converter in successive cycles to develop pulse trains representing various functions of these patterns.
