    Abstract: VISUALLY AGING SCROLL BAR A visually aging scroll bar is associated with a window or viewport on a computer display as part of a computer system, and contains a slider to indicate relative positioning in the window of a document, such as a data file, image file, audio file, text file, or spreadsheet. The current position of the scroll bar slider is monitored by the computer system. After a first predetermined sampling period has elapsed, a first region matching the current position of the scroll bar slider is created. The visual appearance of the region is determined by a predetermined region heating rate. For example, a newly created region starts at "cold", which can be indicated by a violet-indigo color. After a second sampling period has elapsed, the computer system again checks the current position of the scroll bar slider. If the current position still matches the first region, the visual appearance of the first region symbolically "warms up" as indicated by the region heating rate. This incrementally changing visual appearance (for example, from violet to indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and finally a deep red) continues for as long as the current slider position matches the first region, up until a maximum region symbolic "temperature" is reached.

    Abstract: An apparatus, program product and method dynamically adjust the scroll rate used to scroll through the program information for various television programs available to a television viewer to provide a variable rate of scroll for program information presented to the television viewer. The scroll rate may be varied, for example, to emphasize certain program information relative to other program information, e.g., by slowing down the scroll rate to increase the visibility for important program information and speeding up the scroll rate to decrease the visibility of less important program information. Dynamic scroll rate adjustment may be utilized in a number of situations, including in connection with non-interactive electronic program listings, interactive electronic program guides, and electronic overlays, among others. Furthermore, dynamic scroll rate adjustment may be based upon a number of different characteristics of the television programs associated with the displayed program information, including for example, the frequency of access of different television programs, or sponsorship of certain television programs.

    Abstract: A computer program debugger is disclosed which stores previous programs whic h have been debugged and the debug parameters which were considered when debugging. When a new computer program is to be debugged, the new debugger is invoked and it automatically compares the executing program to be debugged with the previous programs. When one or more of the debug parameters are so similar that it can be said that the computer program undergoing debugging matches a previously stored computer program, a user is given options to display the matching programs, the modules, the functions, the lines, and the debug parameters and to exchange debug parameters between the programs which can be used to modify the either or any of the programs. The user is further given the option to store the current program undergoing debugging a s a new program to be considered in matching the next program to be debugged. It is further envisioned that the various debug scenarios may be stored and can be recalled separately from the progra m that generates or uses them.

    Abstract: The invention relates to the selective protection of blocks of text or other portions of a shared data object in collaborative computer based system from simultaneous manipulation by two or more users. The collaborative computer based system includes a network connecting a plurality of terminals for communication. Each terminal includes an output display device and a user input device. The collaborative computer based system includes a shared data object simultaneously accessible by a plurality of users of the system. Responsive to a user obtaining access to the shared data object, the user is assigned a cursor available for display on the visual display devices of all current users. A user may attempt to protect portions of the shared data object with a lock region by selecting position coordinates for such a lock region. If the position coordinates do not include any portion of any previously established lock region, a lock region is established, blocking manipulation of the portion of the shared data object so covered against changes associated with cursors other than that of the establishing user. Exercise of appropriate commands release any prior lock region associated with the user.

    Abstract: A browser renders a page for display according to user habits. When a user interacts with a page associated with a network address, an entry is made in a file that associates the element on the page of the user interaction with the network address. When the page is visited again, the file is checked to see if any entry exists. If an entry exists and the stored user interaction is still relevant for that page, the page is rendered so that the location the user interacted with is provided at the top of the display, or the element is re-arranged, as in the case of a table, or both re-positioning and re-arranging occurs. Such page rendering reduces the need for the user to scroll through the page to view the desired information.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method improve the readability of text on a computer system by changing the positioning of one or more words to eliminate potential problems in readability that can be identified by examining the text. When a potential problem is identified, th e word to word positioning of text may be adjusted to compress one or more lines and/or to expand one or more lines to move one or more words to a different line. For example, if two adjacent lines begin with the same word, the first line could be compressed so the first word of the secon d line is moved to the end of the first line. In the alternative, the first line could be expanded so the last word of the first line is moved to the first word of the second line. By selectively changing the positioning of words, the readability of the text may be greatly improved.

    Abstract: The method of the present invention may be utilized for providing identification of blocks of text or other portions of a shared data object in a collaborative computer based system. The collaborative computer based system includes a plurality of workstations. Each workstation includes an output display device and a user input device. The system includes a shared data object, simultaneously accessible by a plurality of users of the system. Responsive to a user obtaining access to the shared data object, the user is assigned a cursor for display on the visual display devices of other users. The assigned cursor has a user related visual characteristic. Responsive to user selection, previously unselected portions of the shared data object may be associated to a user. Upon such association of a portion of the shared data object, a user related visual characteristic of the establishing user is extended to the newly associated portion. Further, a second visual at tribute is extended to the object to identify the nature of the association, such as whether other users are to be locked out of modifying these associated portions.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for distinctively and proportionally displaying windows on a computer display screen is disclosed. The amount of time each of the windows presented to the display screen is active ("in focus") is monitored. Upon receipt of a command from the user, the windows that were active a longer length of time are displayed more distinctively than windows that were active a shorter length of time. More specifically, windows are displayed on the display screen having a window size proportional to the length of time each of the window were active. For example, a window that was active 40% of the time will have a size that is 40% of the specified window tiling area. Windows that have not been active long enough to exceed a minimum window tiling threshold are displayed as icons and are not included in the calculations of percentage of activity of the windows.
