Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a storage system with a cascaded copy targeting function and enhanced perfectibility. SOLUTION: A storage controller cooperable with a host computer device and a plurality of controlled storage apparatuses comprises: a host write component operable to write a data object to a source data image at one of a plurality of the controlled storage apparatuses; a copy component operable in response to a metadata state to control the copying of the data object to a target data image in a delimited sequence of data images in a cascade at the plurality of controlled storage apparatuses; and a fill-in component operable in response to the detection of an offline condition of a disk containing the target data image to control the substitution of a fill-in disk in place of the disk containing the target data image. Abstract:
A method of handling a backup process comprises receiving an instruction initiating a backup process from a source storage volume to a target storage volume, identifying the type of backup process as either a full backup process intended to make a complete copy of the source storage volume on the target storage volume or a fractional backup process intended to make a copy of data changed on the source storage volume on the target storage volume, and if a cascade exists for the identified backup process type, adding the target storage volume to the existing cascade for the identified backup process type, or if a cascade does not exist for the identified backup process type, starting a new cascade of the target storage volume from the source storage volume.
Abstract:
Provided are techniques for maintaining instant virtual copies. A request to perform an instant virtual copy operation to create an instant virtual copy from a first volume to a new volume is received. It is determined that the first volume has not been modified since a last instant virtual copy operation has been performed. It is determined whether an intermediate volume and an intermediate map have already been created. In response to determining that the intermediate volume and the intermediate map have not already been created, the intermediate volume and the intermediate map are created, the intermediate volume is made dependent on the first volume in a dependency chain based on the intermediate map, and the new volume is made dependent on the intermediate volume in the dependency chain.
Abstract:
Recovering a data backup comprising a data image and a point-in-time copy of the data image. Provided is a virtual data image disk for storing a copy of the data image and a virtual snapshot disk for storing data of the point-in-time copy. The data image is copied 402 from a backup to the virtual data image disk and data from the point-in-time copy of the data image is copied 402 to the virtual snapshot disk. It is then determined 407 if the data of the point-in-time copy exists in the virtual data image disk and if it does not then copying 410 data from the point-in-time copy to the virtual snapshot disk and so avoiding data replication they by reducing the amount of storage space used. If it is determined that the data already exists in the virtual data image disk then the virtual snapshot disk is mapped 412 to that data of the virtual image disk.
Abstract:
Various systems, processes, and products may be used to source clean cascaded volumes. In particular implementations, a system, process, and product for source cleaning cascaded volumes may include the ability to store a primary volume and a plurality of cascaded backup volumes. The system, process, and product may also include the ability to determine whether a write to one of the backup volumes is due to a background copy being made of another volume in the cascade and adjust a background copy indicator in a volume map for the backup volume if the write is due to a background copy and to determine whether a write to one of the backup volumes is due to a write to another volume in the cascade and adjust a write copy indicator in a volume map for the backup volume if the write is due to a write to another cascaded volume.
