Abstract: 1281779 Data transfer; cash transactions INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 23 Nov 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 55546/70 Headings G4M and G4T [Also in Division B6] An apparatus for transferring embossed and magnetic information from a card to a record medium, both having magnetizable regions, comprises means for pressing the card and record medium together to imprint the embossed information and a magnetic transfer head movable over the card and record medium while their magnetizable regions are in register. The embodiment described with respect to Fig. 1 is identical to the embodiment of Specification 1,281,780 except for the construction of magnetic transfer head (38), see below. In a modification, Fig. 4, one or more magnetic tapes 102 are passed over cards 100, 112 and bands 114 and beneath record medium 106. Bands 114 are optionally used instead of wheels (42), Fig. 1 (not shown), and to obtain a complete record of business transactions for inventory purposes, bands 116 may be provided for recording item numbers. Both sets of bands may be controlled from the keyboard of a cash register. The information on tape(s) 102 can be read on an offline machine or read directly by a head 118 which sends data to an on-line computer. Recording head (38), Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), comprises ceramic magnets (60, 62) and high permeability pole pieces (64, 66, 68) which form gaps (70, 72), the latter having a smaller field of opposite polarity to the former. Hysteresis curves are given, Fig. 3 (not shown), relating to the passage of head (38), with gap (70) leading, over the superposed magnetizable areas of card (16), Fig. 1 (not shown), and strip (30) of record medium (28).

Abstract: 953,072. Flip-flop circuits. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. July 29, 1960 [Aug. 26, 1959], No. 26546/60. Heading H3T. A resonant circuit is included in the coupling between the two stages of a flip-flop circuit to control the duration of the output pulse from the second stage, and means are provided to inhibit oscillation of the circuit during the rise and fall periods so as to reduce the rise and fall times. As shown, one of the couplings between two complementary transistors T1, T2 includes a series resonant circuit 22 so that an input pulse at terminal 1 will render transistor T1 conducting and this in turn will render T2 conducting, the feed-back through 21 maintaining T1 conducting even if the input pulse terminates. In the absence of the third transistor T3 the current through the resonant circuit would oscillate sinusoidally for half a cycle increasing to a maximum and decreasing to zero, so maintaining transistor T2 conducting for that period and at the end of the period both transistors would revert to the non-conducting state. However, in order to steepen the initial part of the current waveform applied to transistor T2 a normally conducting transistor T3 is connected across the capacitor 200 so that current rises in inductance 100 exponentially instead of sinusoidally. When transistor T2 becomes conducting sufficient current flows in the coupling network to bias transistor T3 to cut-off so that after this point the current through circuit 22 increases in resonant fashion. In a similar manner, transistor T3 becomes conducting again while T2 is being cut-off so the trailing edge of the pulse is also steepened.
