Abstract: Network communications between personal computer systems using Universal serial bus (USB) communications is provided by a USB hub 200 which allows multiple hosts to exist in the same USB-based network. The networking hub includes a number of sub-hubs 202, 204, 206, each connected to an upstream computer system and having ports 230, 232, 234, for peripheral devices. The sub-hubs are connected to one or more virtual network adapters (VNA) 210, 212, 214 which emulate a network adapter and allow communication between the multiple hosts. When a host queries its sub-hub over its upstream connection 220, 222, 224, the sub-hub indicates the VNA as an attached USB function. The host then attaches the VNA as a USB/Network function since it sees the VNA as a network adapter attached to the USB sub-hub.
