Cheques 10 are fed past a device R, Fig. 1, for sensing magnetic ink data, and beneath a plate 16 having a series of recesses containing balls 19 which press the cheques down against a moving belt 15 which carries them to enter the nip.of rollers 22, 23, Figs. 1 and 2, and 24, 25. The cheques are thereby passed between the roller 25 and belts 38, so as to be inverted and turned at right-angles, then being passed by the belts 38 beneath a plate 43 having similar balls 19 to rollers 45, Fig. 3. A series of stacker pockets 39 are arranged in series, each having rollers 47, 48 to pass a cheque on to rollers 49, 50 of the next pocket. A pocket is selected to receive a cheque by the movement of a deflector member 61 by a magnet 60 in response to the device R, thus causing the cheque to pass beneath a guide 64 and a kicker spring 65 on to a platform 55, being pressed against a wall 46 by a wheel 53 rotated by a belt 54 and carried on an arm 52. The platform 55 drops under the weight of the stack by compression of a spring 56. Specification 976,140 is referred to.
