Abstract: 788,780. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Aug. 17, 1956 [Aug. 22, 1955], No. 25281/56. Class 100(1) Sheet-forwarders; grippers. Sheets are supported at rest adjacent a continuously movable conveyer, such as a belt or roller, and electromagnetic clutching means is operable to clamp the sheets to the conveyer for movement therewith. As shown, an endless belt 1 of woven nylon thread or other non-magnetic material is supported by two cylinders 2, 3, one of which is driven continuously. Adjacent the belt is a fixed block 4 having a series of slots 5 whose slightly tapered sides support the reduced ends of free ferromagnetic rollers 6. Light spring 6a bias the rollers upwardly. On the opposite side of the belt 1 is an electromagnet 7 connectible to a source 8 of direct current through a switch 9. A presserbar 10 of non-magnetic material having a low coefficient of friction is fastened to the magnet. A record sheet 11 is fed in at right angles to the direction of the belt feed and passes between the belt and rollers 6 until it strikes a pair of fixed stops 12. The sheet 11 is held in this position by a light pressure finger 13 until the switch 9 is closed, whereupon the electromagnet 7 pulls the free rollers 6 which press the sheet against the belt 11. The sheet is fed rapidly towards the cylinder 2 by the belt, amd is then gripped between the belt and a spring-urged roller 14 for movement to another station. Current may be supplied to the magnet 7 by a cam-controlled or other selective switch. In a modification, the record sheet 11 is retained at rest above the upper, run of the endless belt 1, a ferromagnetic presser-bar aranged above the sheet has a pin-and-slot connection with one end of a pivoted link, and the electromagnet 7 is arranged below the upper run of the belt. When the magnet 7 is temporarily energized, the presser-bar is attracted thereto and Dresses the record sheet on the moving belt 1. and the bar is moved therewith a short distance and subsequently returned by a spring. A further modification is described wherein the record sheet 11 is fed transversely to a rest position between two opposed travelling endless belts, where it rests on the upper run of the lower belt but is retained at rest by a light spring. The lower belt is of non-magnetic material, the upper belt is of magnetic material, and an electromagnet is arranged beneath the upper run of the lower belt. On energizing the magnet, the upper belt is pulled against the record sheet which is thus transported by the two belts. All the devices can be used as means for decelerating moving sheets by slowing down or slipping the belt drive.

Abstract: 1,016,712. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Aug. 1, 1962 [Aug. 2, 1961], No. 29556/62. Heading B6F. Type - wheel machines ; hammer impression arrangements.-A selective printer having a single continuously rotating type carrier 5 is provided with a hammer mechanism comprising a firing pin 2 supported on leaf-springs 13, 14 and a hammer 1, latched by an electromagnet 25 in its rest position and urged into an operative position by a spring 21 on de-energization of said electromagnet to impel longitudinally said pin 2, which impacts a record tape 3 against a selected type character 4 on the type carrier 5. The released hammer is arrested by a stop 32 whilst the pin 2 which effected the impression under momentum is arrested by a stop 16 on rebound, any oscillation being quickly damped by a plunger and spring arrangement mounted internally of said pin (Fig. 3, not shown). The hammer 1 is restored by an arm 34, which is released by an electromagnet 44 when the high point of a restoring cam 10 is nearest to it, whereupon a spring 39 moves the arm 34 upwardly in timed relationship with the rotation of cam 10 to move the hammer from a position abutting said stop 32 to a position adjacent pole faces 29 and 30 of the electromagnet 25, which is then re-energized to re-latch the hammer. Paper, strip feeding, guiding and tensioning arrangements; positive letter-spacing arrangements.-The record strip 3 is fed from a feed reel 57 over guide 60, 61 and deflected about a continuously rotating capstan 58, the incremental advancing of the tape being effected by a foot 51 and pawl 52 arranged at the distal end of a lever 38 integral with the oscillating restoring arm 34. When the arm 34 moves counterclockwise the pawl 52 moves away from the foot 51, thus unclamping the tape 3, which, however, is prevented from reverse movement by a second pawl 54 biased towards a guide pin 56 by a spring 55. As the arm 34 subsequently moves in a clockwise direction the tape is clamped against the foot 51 by a wedging action produced by the pawl 52 and the tape is moved a distance from right to left. The tape advance is assisted by a tensioning member 63, which when sufficiently deflected increases the force on the capstan 58, the latter advancing the tape a small increment. Roller inking arrangements.-An inking roller 11 mounted on a shaft 12 bears against the type carrier 5 and continuously replenishes the ink on characters 4. The roller has an internal ink reservoir and the ink is conveyed from the reservoir to the type carrier through a porous wall. Power for rotation of the inking roller 11 is supplied through the frictional engagement of the roller with the type carrier 5.
