Abstract: 916,436. Magnetic recording &c. heads; supporting. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. July 29, 1960 [Aug. 25, 1959], No. 26548/60. Class 40 (2). To prevent air-spaced magnetic heads contacting records moving below a critical speed, a centrifugal switch 66 energizes a solenoid 60, without whose operation, the heads cannot be engaged. A multiple-disc recorder has pairs of heads 15, gimbally mounted on arms 14 and urged towards double-sided records 10 by torsion members 24 moved in unison by trellis levers 28, 30. Levers 36, 44 move in unison about a pivot 42, when dogs 56, 58 on their outer ends are locked together by an encompassing bifurcate member 62, whereupon an actuator 82 rotates all the levers clockwise, the tail end 52 of the primary lever being latched under a member 70. When the record speed falls to danger level, the solenoid 60 releases the dogs 56, 58, the levers 36, 44 move independently, the heads are withdrawn by a spring 74 and a pin 75 trips the latch 70 to restore all the members to their rest positions.
