Abstract: What is disclosed is an optical scanner for reading bar codes. The scanner is designed to be held by hand and moved above and across the bar code which is printed on a suitable record substrate. The scanner is composed of a suitable casing containing lamps in the lower portion thereof which illuminate the bar coded record. The illumination is reflected through a unique aperture in the lower surface of the scanner and directed onto a light sensor arrangement such as a photocell. The code marks are in the form of code bars such as black lines separated by white portions. The code consists of "single" code bars and "double" code bars which are, in one embodiment, twice the width of the "single" bars. The aperture arrangement of the scanner is designed according to a scheme such that the resultant signal from the detection of a single bar will always be a known fraction, such as one-half, the amplitude of the signal produced by the detection of a double bar regardless of the changes in speed at which the hand-held scanner is moved across the bar coded record.

Abstract: 1275016 Coating apparatus INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 13 Nov 1970 [23 Dec 1969] 54010/70 Heading B2L Apparatus for coating an object 26 with droplets comprises a coating chamber 12 and a second chamber 10 connected thereto so that coating medium from a nozzle 20 is carried by inert gas from a nozzle 24 from the chamber 10 to the chamber 12 and falls as droplets onto the object 26. The coating medium is provided from a heated storage chamber 17 and the inert gas is introduced through heated water in the chamber 38. Heavy droplets produced in the chamber 10 fall back to the bottom of the chamber to be removed through a drain and of the droplets entering the chamber 12 the light ones rise and escape through the open top of the chamber and the heavier ones, which come within a small range of sizes, fall either on to the object 26 or to be collected thereunder! Water is introduced to the sides of chamber 12 by a spray 35 and is carried away through a drain 34. The object is stood on an internally cooled work holder 28. A heater 30 is provided. The chamber 10 is surrounded by a heated water jacket 36.
