Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method, system, and program for setting a connected storage device through a storage adapter. SOLUTION: The storage adapter is provided with an initialization routine for generating initialization data to write to a storage device when adding a storage space to the storage device so that the storage space can be used by this system. At receiving a request, the storage space is added to the system. A command is transmitted to the storage adapter capable of inhibiting the storage adapter from pertaining the initialization routine. Then, the initialization data for the storage space are generated, and transmitted to the storage adapter to write to the storage space to initialize the storage space.

Abstract: A method, system, program and data structure for selecting a path to one of at least two controllers. Each controller 14a,b provides access to storage areas e.g. Logical Unit Numbers of storage device 16 and path information is received by host computers 4a,b from the controllers indicating a preferred controller for accessing each storage area as determined by a load balancing algorithm. An input/output (I/O) command directed to a target storage area is processed in hosts 4a,b and the command is directed to the controller indicated as the preferred controller by device driver 22a,b via host bus adaptors (HBA) 6a- d and hubs 10a,b based on entries in path table 24a,b established in initialisation. The host initially sends the I/O command to the preferred controller but will send to a non-preferred controller if the preferred controller cannot execute the command.

Abstract: Count-key-data records are mapped to a fixed-block architecture storage device using a fuzzing packing method that packs some count-key-data records while writing other count-key-data records at a beginning of a next available sector (unpacked) according to the size of the count-key-data record, the size of the sector, and the location of the next available byte for writing data in the current sector. If the number of sectors required to write the current record, if the record were written starting at the next available byte location in the current record, is greater than a minimum number of sectors to write that same record if that record were written at the beginning of the next available sector, then the record is written unpacked, otherwise the record is packed.
