Abstract: A developing apparatus for an electrostatic reproduction machine includes a nonmagnetic cylinder rotatably mounted relative to a fixed magnetic field generating means. A multicomponent magnetic developer material is fed to the cylinder forming magnetic bristles of developer material thereon for brushing contact with a photosensitive electrostatic plate bearing an electrostatic latent image thereon. A portion of the developer material transfers to the plate developing the image, and the remainder is slung from the rotating cylinder onto a guide member thereby providing marked agitation and recombination of the developer material resulting in an increased triboelectric charge level of the developer material. The magnetic field is oriented to facilitate the slinging of the developer material against the guide. It further provides a directional field following the delivery point of the developer material to the cylinder which prevents developer material from flowing over the outer edges of the magnetic field existing at the development zone and post development zone. The developer material is thus prevented from being attracted to the cylinder at the development zone and thereafter prematurely slung from the rotating cylinder thereby keeping unwanted developer material from being carried away from the developer unit by the plate.

Abstract: For use in an electrophotographic copy machine utilizing magnetic brush roll development, an improved hollow magnetic roll made of non-magnetic material containing axially located grooves along the exterior periphery. The grooves are spaced in a range from 15-25 times the diameter of the permeable carrier beads used in the development process and the lands between grooves are polished to a high degree, e.g., 25 mu inches. The depth of the grooves is to a minimum of 1-2 times bead diameter while the groove width is to a minimum of 2-3 times bead diameter.

Abstract: A magnetic brush developer has a toner dispenser cooperable with a removable toner container bottle (200) so that transfer of toner to the dispenser occurs without spillage or exposure of the toner to the external environment. The bottle (200) and dispenser have mating interfaces (216,218) which must be properly located, and then rotated, before dumping of toner from the bottle to the dispenser can occur. Thereafter, the bottle (200) is depressed to slide an apertured cap (204) from closure by a valve member (210) and to depress a valve disc (228) against a spring (230) to give access to the dispenser. The bottle mounting mechanism is positioned in a slidable cover (220) so that the toner content can be evenly distributed along the length of the dispenser, this length corresponding substantially to the length of the development zone.

Abstract: A xerographic copier includes a pre-clean corona (13) and a transfer corona (12). A developing station (14) employs carrier beads coated with tetrafluoroethylene, which material can film on to the drum. In order to reduce such filming, the pre-clean and transfer corona currents are adjusted to the same polarity and to levels, under a condition of operation of the machine in which no copy sheet is fed through the transfer station, which produce charge densities on the photoconductor element within 0.025 microcoulombs of each other.

An ink ribbon cartridge 180 of the kind described and claimed in the parent Specification, including a slot 215 to receive a drive roller (40, Fig. 1) is modified in that the ribbon passes from a supply spool 184 to a take-up spool 199 around a guide 214 positioned at the end of the slot 215 furthest from the axis of rotation of the take-up spool. The drive roller (40) is driven by mechanism substantially as described in parent Specification, having two gear ratios selectable as a consequence of supplying the cartridge to the mechanism, the gear ratio being selectable according to the presence or absence of a member 220 1 limiting the depth of a recess 220 in the cartridge. The member 220 1 is intended to coact with :a gearratio selecting member (221, Fig. 4) of similar nature but modified construction with respect to the mechanism described in parent Specification. The cartridge further includes a slot 216 from which a stud (43, Fig. 5) may project, to indicate the amount of ribbon on the takeup spool 199. Knobs 190, 204, on the supply and take-up spools respectively, permit manual winding of the ribbon.
