    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provided the same information for many client computer devices by providing a messaging and queuing unit and server including server units. SOLUTION: A web server 3b includes the messaging and queuing unit 312 an web servers 32a to 32n with normal availability. A web server 3b is a high- availability server which can service more requests than the web servers 3a and 3c with the normal availability. Request specifying the web server 3b are sent from client web browsers 1a to 1n through the internet 2. A messaging and queuing unit 31 of the web server 3b receives the requests and puts them in a queue. Web servers 32a to 32n when getting ready to receive requests from the queue informs the unit 31 of that.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure the equal reference model data among the clients by forming a constitution where every client has the conference model data stored in a server, an instruction is sent to the server when a certain client edits a model and the server immediately processes the received instruction to send the instruction again to the client. SOLUTION: A client computer 32A has a processor 34 which operates by the instructions of client codes 36A, 36B and 36C which are stored in a memory 38 and/or the disk of each client computer. The images are outputted via a video peripheral device 40 of a monitor, etc., connected to the processor 34. The computer 32A stores the current model data 60, receives a model object 36A from the servers 50A to 50D respectively by an apply Op Code method 62 and updates the object 36A. The object 36A is sent to every client.

    Abstract: There is described a personal conferencing method and system for a client (32)/server (30) environment. The server (30) stores conference model data (60) such as a shared chalkboard or a molecular model and each client has a copy of the conference model data (61). When one of said clients (32A, 32B, 32C) edits the model (61) it creates an instruction (64A) for operating on the model and sends the instruction (64A) to the server (30). The server (30) operates (62) on its conference model data (60) on receipt of the instruction (64A) and resends the instruction (64B) to each of the clients (32A, 32B, 32C) and each client (32A, 32B, 32C) performs the same operation (63) on their respective copies of the conference data model (61). Whereby after a plurality of different operating instructions (64B) from different clients (32A, 32B, 32C) the respective copies of the conference model data (60) are equivalent.

    Abstract: A gene server 25 which communicates across the Internet with a client computer 10, comprises a database 90 storing gene sets, each gene set comprising parameter values defining the display of an advertisement on a client computer. The server includes a script 70, responsive to a request from the client, for providing a gene set from the database to the client. A further script 80 is responsive to a report from said client for storing if an advertisement displayed according to the gene set has been selected by a user. A mutation program 100 periodically mutates the gene sets according to the reports of user selection. A MouseEvent class may be incorporated in an applet 60 for causing an event such as the mouse cursor entering or exiting the advert boundary to call a command for the web browser 40 to jump 9a to the advertiser's home page 120. When the applet 60' is instantiated from within the browser, a tracking class 65 is downloaded and instantiated. The tracking object maintains a timer which may be halted, for example when the user jumps to a completely independent web page. In response, the timer value and the user's failure to select the advertisement are reported to the server.

    Abstract: A software bridge (300) is introduced between a client (53) and a server (54) in a client-server distributed computing environment. The bridge presents the interface of a server to the client and the interface of a client to the server. The bridge is used for monitoring or logging of requests and associated data flowing between the client and the server, useful for example in problem determination. The bridge is also used for workload balancing between servers. It can further be used to reduce network connectivity between multiple clients and multiple servers (Fig 11). All of these advantages can be achieved without any modifications to existing client or server code.

    Abstract: A mechanism is described for protecting against invalid usage of proxy objects (449) after malfunction of a server and also for transparently re-creating proxy objects in a client of a client-server distributed processing system. A proxy class is used that has additional attributes indicating the name (455) of the target object in the server, an indication as to whether the name is presently valid (459) and an alternate pointer (457) to the target object. A proxy register object (155) in the client maintains pointers to all the proxy objects (449) which point to objects in the server. On malfunction of the server, and consequent invalidity of the proxy objects (449), the proxy register object (155) causes all proxy objects (449) to be refreshed.
