Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain good tripological performance to a wide range of environment conditions as well by incorporating chemically active an inert components into a lubricant component element. CONSTITUTION: Part of a disk 15 includes and improved type lubricating film system 14. The bifunctional lubricating system or thin-film 14 is applied to the exposed surface of a coating film 13 of a carbon base. The exposed surface of the recording thin film 12 or 13 which is the exposed surface of the disk is lubricated by first applying the lubricant component having at least one chemically active groups, for example, mono-functional molecules having one active terminal group within the main chain constitution and the molecular structure. This lubricant component is adhered to the thin film 12 or 13 by the effect of its chemical active groups. As a result, the lubricant component fixed over the entire apart is formed. The lubricant component is thereafter made chemically inert. The thin film 14 has the chemically active component 20 and the chemically inert component 22. The component 20 is tightly adhered to the surface of the disk and the component 22 is adhered to the main chain of the adhesive lubricant component.

Abstract: The invention is a method of plating a nonmetallic substrate comprising the steps of depositing an adhesion enhancing film on the substrate, treating the adhesion enhancing film to make the film catalytic, and forming an outer coating and passivating plate on the adhesion enhancing film. The resulting plated, nonmetallic substrates may comprise any number of materials used as an inner substrate such as compounds of oxide, nitride, phosphide, carbide, glass, ceramic, and mixtures thereof. In use, the resulting substrate may find application in any number of data storage and retrieval application.
