A film chip 3 to be developed is placed in a development device 1 which includes a thin vertically orientated development chamber, the end walls of which have grooves 8, 9 therein to hold the chip from contact with the side walls which are closely spaced from the restrained chip. Liquid enters the development chamber from an inlet chamber 15 via dispensing channels 16-20 and a dispersion chamber 21 having lugs 22-24 for supporting the bottom edge of the chip. Liquid flows up both sides of the chip and into an overflow trough, and from thence is carried away by a channel 11. Successive solutions are applied in turn through the chamber 15, a sharp interface between successive liquids being obtained due to laminar flow.
