Abstract: 992,171. Controlling friction clutches. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Jan. 10, 1963 [Jan. 10, 1962], No. 1173/63. Headings F2C and F2L. [Also in Divisions B6, G2 and G5] A sprocket 12, Fig. 5 (not shown), in web feeding apparatus (see Division B6) is mounted on a shaft 100, Fig. 6, driven through a spring clutch 104. A solenoid 106, when energized, swings a clutch lever 108 about a pivot 110 to engage the clutch 104. A bifurcated lever 112, pivoted at 114, carries a pin 116 which engages the teeth 120 of a ratchet wheel 118 on the shaft 100 under a spring bias 122. Another pin 124 carried by the lever 112 engages the clutch lever 108 to disengage the pin 116 when the spring clutch 104 is engaged. Mounted on the bed 2 of the apparatus is a solenoid 126, Figs. 6, 7, operative when energized to swing a hooked-shaped lever 128 about a pivot 130 from a position (Fig. 7) in which the swing of the clutch lever 108 is limited to allow only the disengagement of the pin 116 from the teeth 120, to a position clear of the path of the clutch lever 108 to allow disengagement of the pin 116 and engagement of the clutch 104. When the web reel is placed on the winding hub of the apparatus, a switch 76, Fig. 10, is closed. Closing manual switch 132 will energize solenoids 126 and 106 through the normally closed switch 90, thus engaging the clutch 104. A clutch mechanism 40, Fig. 8, applies a continuous torque either high or low depending upon the condition of the clutch mechanism which tends to wind up the web reel when in position on the hub. The clutch mechanism includes two clutch springs 42 and 43 which when engaged cause the shaft 14 to be driven with a high torque from the constantly driven shaft 41. A pin 44 extends through a hole in a ring 45 and engages the clutch spring 43. The ring has, a crown of teeth 46 coacting with a detent 47, Fig. 9, normally biased to engagement by a spring 48. In this condition, the ring is stopped and the spring 43 is expanded and released. The shaft 14 then has only a low torque applied thereto through the spring 42. A solenoid 49 when energized, retracts the detent 47 which causes the spring 43 to engage and the shaft 14 to have a high torque applied thereto. With the switch 160, Fig. 12, held closed the circuit is completed through the solenoid 49 and normally close switch 92 thereby applying a high torque to the web reel.
