Abstract: In a matrix type liquid crystal display in which each picture element is defined by the crossing area of associated transparent row (60) and column (70) drive conductors, contrast is increased by narrowing the gap (70, 76) between adjacent drive conductors to an optimum spacing for contrast and by ensuring that the whole area, except the picture element areas (80), remains dark, This can be done by orienting polarising filters to give a dark effect and inverting the drive signals so that a logically ON picture element is electrically off, and therefore light. Alternatively, the non picture elements can be made permanently dark by, for example, blackening transparent conductor-supporting substrates in areas between adjacent conductors.
