Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical device which has an improved efficiency and improved contrast ratio. SOLUTION: A light valve supplies image formation light to a projection lens, which projects the image formation light on a screen. The wheel 30 has the front and back which have different color segments and are displaced from each other and when the different color segments of the front and back overlap with each other polarized light is separated into different color beams at the same time. When the front and back are parallel, two beams from the front and back are parallel to each other. Or when the front meets the back to form a wedge, the two beams have different directions. The color segments of the front and back are offset mutually and have transparent segments respectively, so some color beam is provided for one light valve. The wheel is rotated and the light valve is irradiated with different colors sequentially simultaneously.
