Abstract: 875,123. Feeding magnetic tapes. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 29, 1958 [Dec. 30, 1957], No. 41905/58. Class 40 (2). A tape feeding and guiding arrangement in which one of two rotary drum-mounted heads 21 scan successive, stationary lengths of an elongate record tape T between the guides 16, 17 and around the periphery of the drum 11. For scanning, the tape is held by the brake members A, B against the guides 17, 19 respectively. The limit stop members 28, 29 are in the form of gratings and fit closely into a rectangular store member denoted COLUMN 2, whose width, perpendicular to the plane of the drawing, equals the width of the tape and to the lower end of which suction may be applied. A loop of tape is held between the limiting positions of the lower surface of the member 28 (suction off) and the upper surface of tha member 29 and the column side-walls (suction on). The difference in tape length between the two extremes constitutes the successive length scanned by the heads. To maintain registration, the member 29 is adjusted by the solenoids S 1 , S 11 forming part of a servo means controlled by index marks recorded on the record so that successive equal lengths of tape are transported by the system. Additional columns 1 and 3, connected to suction from below maintain loops of tape between the levels of upper and lower limit stops such as at 36, which control the drive to the feed and take up reels 10, 12. Control of function is by a network of motors, relays and switches (Fig. 2, not shown).
