Abstract: This specification describes image rotation hardware for allowing the displaying of an image stored in digital form in other than its originally stored orientation. In this hardware a word-organized image buffer stores a digital representation of a full image with each picture element (pel) of the full image being represented by a bit within the buffer. The buffer is divided into a plurality of square sections each storing a portion or subimage of the full image. Each section is nxn bits in size where n is the number of bits in a word stored in the buffer. The contents of each square section of the buffer can be transferred into an nxn storage array with first word organization, and then transferred back into the buffer with second word organization such that the subimage stored by the square section is rotated through 90 DEG .

Abstract: In a raster display device, such as a cathode-ray tube, in which the display is computed on-the-fly, such as in the raster vector generator, when the computation of a line, or group of lines, exceeds a given time, the raster scan is halted until the computation is complete. The line at which the scan is halted is retraced at reduced brightness and without modulation by video information. Overflow is detected by coincidence of a computation signal and line sync pulse.

Abstract: Image rotation apparatus suitable for use in an image display system includes a word-organized digital image buffer divided into squares representing sub-images and having a size equal to the size of a word. Means are provided for writing the bit pattern of each sub-image word-by-word into an n x n storage array and for re-writing the contents of the storage array word-by-word back into the image buffer but with the words re-oriented by 90.degree.. Where the image buffer is itself square, it is divided into quadrants: re-oriented words from one quadrant are then written back from the array to the adjacent quadrant. In this event two interconnected n x n storage arrays can be used, one acting as a buffer for the creation of space within the image buffer prior to the reoriented words being written therein.

Abstract: In a raster display device, such as a cathode-ray tube, in which the display is computed on-the-fly, such as in the raster vector generator type, when the computation of a line, or group of lines, exceeds a given period, the raster scan is halted until the computation is complete.
