Abstract: TYPEWRITER CARTRIDGE LOCK-DOWN In a typewriter, a ribbon is contained within a cartridge which is in turn placed upon the ribbon mechanism support of the typewriter. The cartridge is maintained rigidly clamped to the support but readily releasable by means of operator actuation of a release lever. The cartridge may either be a single cartridge or may be stacked such as where two cartridges are utilized together, one containing a print ribbon, the other containing, for example, a correction ribbon. The cartridge containing the print ribbon is provided with a bottom plate or surface which is formed to define an aperture therein for the admission of a clamping member attached to the support. The clamping member is inserted into the aperture and then caused to rotate about its axis a part turn at which point the clamping member engages an inclined surface on the interior of the cartridge causing the cartridge to be wedged downward against the support. In so wedging, the hold down mechanism is capable of retaining the cartridge in a fixed position to oscillate with the support. LE9-78-026

Abstract: Web cartridge (10) having a supply spool (12), a take-up spool (34) and a web extending from the supply spool (12) to the take-up spool (34) through exit (18) and the entrance (26) apertures to form an exposed portion of the web exterior to the cartridge. A beam spring (40) supported by the cartridge, has one end (44) positioned in squeegeeing relation to the convolutions of the web accumulated on the take-up spool (34) for forcing the web against the convolutions, the end (44) being positioned to be the only portion of the spring (40) engaging the web in order to remove buckles in the last convolution and thus preventing voids and wrinkles in the spool.

Abstract: ANTI-REVERSAL BACKCHECK FOR PRINTER RIBBON CARTRIDGE TAKEUP SPOOL In a typewriter ribbon cartridge, it is necessary to maintain tension on the span of ribbon extending outside the cartridge to prevent tangling and to insure high print quality during machine operation. One technique for insuring that adequate tension is maintained is disclosed herein as an anti-backup back check device. Connected to the takeup spool of the ribbon cartridge is a disc member supporting thereon a pair of thin flexible resilient arms with outwardly oriented pointed ends. These ends formed in the shape of points engage ratchet teeth formed around the interior surface of a cylinder. The cylinder is formed as a part of the ribbon cartridge and, thus, is permanently positioned and fixed with respect to it. As the takeup spool disc and arms are rotated by the ribbon feed mechanism, the arms will flex and permit a rotation of the disc and takeup spool with a minimal drag force. Upon reversal, the points on the ends of the arms engage the ratchet teeth and the arms become compression columns resisting the rotation of the disc and spool. The center of the disc and the takeup spool are free floating within reasonable physical constraints. The teeth of the arms are positioned such that they are one-half tooth pitch out of phase to insure that one tooth is always in engagement with a tip of one of the two pawls.

Abstract: LE9-80-019 CARTRIDGE FOR CORRECTION MEDIA OR TACKY TAPE WITH A WRAP SPRING A typewriter correction tape cartridge for holding and feeding correction tape for a correcting typewriter is improved by the addition of a beam spring cantilever supported such that one end of the beam spring wipes the correction tape onto the takeup spool. This will act to eliminate bubbles, wrinkles and crimps in the tape as it is placed in a new convolution on the spool and will thus reduce the outside diameter of the ultimate disc of used tape. The advantage of this spring is that a reduced size cartridge may be used while utilizing the entire volume of tape supplied on the supply side of the cartridge and, secondly, a more reliable takeup is accomplished due to the elimination of irregularities in the takeup disc. Where space considerations dictate that the spring be bent back sufficiently to accommodate a full spool without contacting the disc of ribbon accumulated on the takeup spool, the cross section of the spring, at a point near the anchor point, may be reduced by notching to provide a stress concentrated flex point and allow the spring member to still perform its function without premature engagement with the disc at a point other than at the wiper end.

Abstract: Disclosed is a mechanism for shifting the rack of a selection mechanism for a single element printer from one position to another in timed relationship to the translation of a barrel cam which provides the necessary mechanical input to control the amount of rotation of the typehead. The control of the rack shift mechanism is a cam arrangement operated in timed relationship with the translating barrel cam to provide for the shifting of the rack at the beginning of each print cycle, if necessary, and the retaining of the rack in its shifted position at the completion of the cycle. The elimination of the restore operation of the rack provides more time during the cycle to operate the selection mechanism and accomplish printing or conversely provides for a smaller amount of time being required for the necessary functions thereby providing the capability of operating the mechanism at a faster rate.
