Abstract: 1,185,928. Automatic exchange systems. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 7 Sept., 1967 [13 Sept., 1966], No. 40868/67. Heading H4K. In a subscriber's line circuit which includes a line transformer TR, " looping " of the transformer secondary from the final selector when the subscriber is being called causes a pair of series connected gating transistors T4, T2 to become conductive and thus apply ringing control pulses from bus RCB via a transformer Tr and diode D2 to a gating thyristor T1 which supplies ringing current from bus RB to the subscriber line. When the subscriber answers, the loop current is effective to switch on another thyristor T3 which short circuits T2 whereby the ringing control pulses can no longer be used for periodically turning on TL The selectors may comprise thyristors or thyratrons. Each row of the final selector includes a device P which supplies +24 V to the associated line transformer secondary when a crosspoint is switched-on by a pulse on the row's control wire. In an alternative (Fig. 4, not shown) device P and NPN transistor T4 are replaced by a single PNP transistor whose emitter and base are connected across a resistor in series with the secondary winding. Voltage limiting is effected by a non-linear resistor L connected across the secondary winding.

Abstract: 1,152,166. Keyboard code generators. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 9 June, 1967 [15 June, 1966], No. 26661/67. Heading G4H. [Also in Division H4] A keysender comprises a column of liquid 3 and a switch member 4, each key being arranged, on actuation, to displace the liquid so that member 4 is moved a distance uniquely corresponding to the actuated key. In one embodiment, the liquid is mercury and member 4 is non-conductive. When a key is depressed, a resilient tube 2 is deformed to displace a corresponding volume of liquid, terminals A, B being short-circuited by bridging of contacts 8 while member 4 is moving to the appropriate position between a pair of contacts 1 1 -9 1 , 0. When the key is released, gas under pressure enters chambers 5, 6, and as member 4 returns to the starting position, the continuity of conductor L 1 is interrupted a number of times depending on the key actuated. In another embodiment, the liquid is non-conductive and member 4 is conductive, causing bridging of successive pairs of parallel-connected contacts. Alternatively, member 4 may interrupt a conductive path between a pair of contacts and produce a single pulse of variable duration.
