Abstract: A magnetic storage disc assembly comprises a cylindrical hub, to which a multiplicity of discs and interleaved spacer rings are mounted coaxially. The hub is connected to a rotary drive spindle, whereby the discs may be rotated relative to magnetic heads. The discs and spacer rings are mechanically fastened to the hub, and a flexible ring clamps the discs and spacers together with a uniform pressure.

Abstract: A system for recording and reproducing data streams in continuous or segmented form on a rotating buffer memory comprises a pair of head accessing mechanisms that are alternately shifted from track to track in synchronism with the rotation of the disk, such that one head is always available for data transfer. The mechanism provides high speed, but stable, shifting between tracks, by a cam arrangement driven by a stepping motor and in turn controlling the head accessing mechanism. The cam comprises a low mass, low inertia disk having a peripheral cam surface with a periodic progression of alternating dwell and ramp portions spaced in accordance with the stepping motor increments. Flexural members urge support devices for the head mechanisms in a direction to maintain cam followers in engagement with the cam surface and insure precise head positioning while filtering out vibrations and eliminating resonances induced by the stepping motor and associated system.

Abstract: 1489477 Moving magnetic heads INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 8 Jan 1975 [25 Jan 1974] 839/75 Heading G5R In a magnetic disc store a transducer head is stepped from track to track by means of a cam having alternate dwell and step regions. As shown, two head assemblies 34, 36 flying over opposite faces of a magnetic disc 28 are stepped alternately, either by a single cam 56 engaging respective cam followers 62, 64, Fig. 2, or by two separate co-rotating cams 104, 106, Fig. 10, or 91 and another not shown, Fig. 8. Each head assembly may be mounted on a parallelogram linkage having two resilient arms 68, 69, Fig. 2, or 70 1 , 71 1 , Fig. 8, or on a spring- biased pivoted arm 116 or 118, Fig. 10. Rotation of a bar 76 raises the heads from the disc surfaces.
