    Abstract: AXIAL DROPLET ASPIRATOR There is described a droplet aspirator for an ink jet printer. The aspirator includes a housing having a tunnel therein, which is spaced from an ink jet nozzle which emits an ink jet stream which passes through the tunnel. A gas stream is also directed through the tunnel at substantially the same velocity as the ink jet stream for reducing the aerodynamic effects on adjacent ink droplets. The tunnels cross-sectional area is substantially constant from one plane to the next when measured in any given plane transverse to the longitudinal axis, for maintaining the velocity of the gas stream constant. The tunnel has a circular crosssection when used in a nozzle per spot system, and when used in an analog deflected system, has an entrance of one geometry, with the tunnel changing in geometry along its longitudinal axis to a different geometry at its exit. Preferably, in the analog deflected system, the entrance geometry is circular and the exit geometry is elliptical or rectangular.

    Abstract: The ink jet printer has a wind tunnel (10) positioned between the outlet nozzles and the paper which receives the ink droplets. An air stream flows through the tunnel which creates a chamber which is sealed to the outside and extends from the nozzles (38) up to its open end. - The ink droplet collection orifice (42) projects into the open end of the tunnel which has a circular inlet cross-section and a non-circular outlet. The outlet is elliptical or rectangular. The rotationally symmetrical charging electrode (8) is incorporated at the inlet end to the tunnel. Pressure equalisation walls (28, 30) which permit the passage of air are located forward of the electrode.

    Abstract: INK JET PRINTING HEAD An ink jet printing head comprising a head body made from a material having high specific stiffness and the head body includes an ink passage which is kept small to retain the high body stiffness. The ink passage comprises a narrow slot connected with internal holes in the body which lead to ink inlet and exit ports. A nozzle plate having a plurality of orifices is fixed to the front of the head body and a piezoelectric crystal is fixed to the back of the head body. The piezoelectric crystal is kept thin compared to the head thickness, typically on the order of 1/20 to 1/30 of the body thickness, so that the effect of the crystal on the resonant characteristics of the assembly is kept small. The ink jet head provides a plurality of columns or jets of ink which are excited in such a way as to break up into uniformly and equally spaced drops at a fixed distance from the nozzle plate containing the orifices which produce the jets.

    Abstract: YO981-025 GRAY SCALE ELECTROSTATIC RECORDING SYSTEM AND A STYLUS DRIVER THEREFOR An electrostatic gray scale printing system is disclosed having particular utility for producing gray scale images from signals received from a suitable data source such as a computer, telecommunications line, data storage device or the like. A unique, high voltage, pulse generating circuit is provided for producing gray scale voltage pulses between 300 and 600 volts to the individual styluses making up said printing device. The circuit utilizes a conventional, low voltage, power supply and a low voltage gray scale intensity signal input to produce the required high voltage printing pulses. The circuit, per se, consists or a high voltage transistor having a relatively large inductance connected in its emitter-collector circuit path. Current flows in the transistor in response to an input voltage applied to the base of the transistor. The collector current is proportional to the value of the input signal divided by the emitter resistor. When the transistor is cut off the inductive tank circuit, including said inductor, produces a high voltage output pulse proportional to the original signal placed on the transistor base. The width of said output pulse is related to the value of the resistor in the inductive tank circuit which also controls the damping of the output pulse.
