Abstract: An audio response terminal for a data processing system which provides an audio output for data that is displayed on a video display unit. The terminal has a control unit that is separate from the display controls, but receives inputs from the display buffer and a separate key pad. The control unit gives the user the ability to specify which rows or columns of a screen of data are to be spoken and also four modes of speech, spell, phonetic spell, speak with punctuation or plain speech. A microprocessor using a translator examines each alphanumeric character and provides a string of digitized phonemes which drive a speech synthesizer. The speech synthesizer provides an audio output signal to a loudspeaker or headphone socket.

Abstract: The appts. includes circuits for receiving signals between the data processing equipment and the communications network. A digital processing circuit (12) controls the operation of the transmitting/receiving circuits in accordance with control code stored in a control store (24). A circuit (4) couples the equipment to the network. The appts. includes common hardware for a range of different network standards. The coupling circuit contains a circuit for identifying which network is to be connected to the equipment. The appts. is configured to the standard of a particular network when the coupling device is connected to the appts. A coupler for connecting data processing equipment to a communications network has a plug for connecting it to a standard communications socket and a connector for attaching the coupler to the data processing equipment. The coupler includes a standard identifier code corresponding to the communications socket for configuring the equipment to comply with that particular standard.
