Abstract: 1282693 Typewriters INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 8 May 1970 [2 June 1969] 22257/70 Heading B6F A sound-deadening device for typewriters comprises a cavity member 50 which together with an enclosure 19 and a backing member 29 defines ingress and egress slots 33, 35 for paper passing around a platen 13, the cavity member 50 being sound absorbing. As shown, the cavity 50 comprises a housing enclosing members 117, 118, 119, 120 of polyurethane foam, the outer members 117, 120 comprising acoustic slot filters. Alternatively, the cavity 50 may be open and lined with sound absorbent material.

Abstract: 1,172,956. Typewriters &c. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 27 June, 1968 [17 July, 1967], No. 30630/68. Heading B6F. Type-selection of characters on spherical typeheads; combination arrangements.-An aggregating lever mechanism is operated to select characters by pull bars 16 actuated by a selection of latches or control members 15 which couple the bars 16 to a reciprocating power bail 17. The control members are operated by rods 18 connected at the right-hand end, Fig. I, to interposer links 40 which are selectively raised in slots in an oscillating cage 21 by a binarycode input operation of electromagnets 34. The cage is oscillated for each character impression about pivots 26 on the typewriter frame Tf along a path (22), Fig. 3, not shown, by a halfrevolution cam 23 and a follower 28. The interposers 40 which have been raised by the magnets 32 are accordingly all actuated to operate the control members 15. Key operation.-The type-selection may also be effected from a keyboard 60. A selected key 61 depresses an encoding interposer 63 and a mechanical coded binary representation is provided by encoding bails 66. A clutch bail 57 is also actuated by any interposer to trip a latch to produce a rotation of a shaft (50) and the depressed interposer 63 moves bails 66 which are adjacent downward entensions 65. An output member 67 individually associated with each bail 66 communicates movement to the interposers 40 and the control members 15. Repeat operation prevention.-A dobber 64 on the key-levers 64 prevents repeat operation.

Abstract: 1,254,639. Typewriters &c. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 25 June, 1969 [15 July, 1968], No. 32190/69. Heading B6F. An encoding keyboard, comprises a plurality of keys operating a plurality of control members 64, 72 movable from non-select to select position by drive shaft 40 and which have an interlocking device (15) as described in Specification 976,473, one of the keys 60 is interconnected with an auxiliary lever 70 so that it works in opposite direction to the lever key 60, i.e. when key 60 is depressed the lever 70 is raised and when released the lever 70 is depressed. Magnetic reed switches operated by the presence of a pivoted shunt 17 or shunt 92 accurately signal the status of the keyboard. Operation of the auxiliary key 60 causes actuation of control member 64 and the end of a horizontal arm 82 of a transfer link is moved forwardly. An upstanding part 84 co-operatively engages an inclined camming bracket 74 attached to the auxiliary lever 70 which is thereby raised against the pull of bias spring 73. Release of the key lever 60 causes opposite effect and lever 70 is depressed, but this time a dobber 71 engages the actuator 72 which is thereby pushed into engagement with the drive shaft 40 and the appropriate signal is given by the magnetic switch 19.
