Abstract: A carriage for a printer or the like comprises a movable carrier which is indexed by cooperating, sliding and stationary racks lying just beneath the circumference of an axially fixed carrier support shaft. Drive and hold latches on the carrier are spring biased into contact with respective racks. Solenoid oscillation of the sliding rack one column position causes like incrementation of the carrier. Angular rotation of the shaft moves the drive and hold latches from their racks into contact with smooth shaft surfaces, causing automatic return of the carrier under dashpot action to the first column print position.

Abstract: 1,243,020. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 20 Nov., 1968 [29 Dec., 1967], No. 54986/68. Heading B6F. A selective printer includes a plurality of print hammers 12, adjacent hammers being spaced by two or more character spaces, the hammers being mounted in a hammer carrier 26 which is movable along a print line so that each hammer occupies more than one print position in succession, and each hammer being coupled to a respective stationary actuator 18. Each hammer 12 may be coupled to its respective actuator 18 by a push rod 14 guided in a pivotally mounted guide 16. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 6, hammers 68 are coupled to actuators 118 by flat pushrods 110, the couplings between each pushrod and the respective hammer and actuator accommodating pivotal movement. The hammer carrier 26 is slidably mounted on a shaft 34 and supported by a roller 40 engaging a fixed guide 42, and may be moved along the print line by a stepping motor (56), Fig. 2 (not shown), coupled to the carrier 26 by a pinion segment (51) and a rack (49). The hammer assembly may be employed in a moving chain, train or belt printer. Positive type machines.-The type may be arranged behind the document being printed.
