Abstract: PCT No. PCT/GB90/00020 Sec. 371 Date Oct. 1, 1992 Sec. 102(e) Date Oct. 1, 1992 PCT Filed Jan. 8, 1990 PCT Pub. No. WO91/11004 PCT Pub. Date Jul. 25, 1991.A disk file includes an expansion ring attached to the wall of the hub and which is located between the lowermost disk of the disk stack and the hub flange. A circular ridge concentric with the hub is formed on the ring and engages the underside of the disk. The ring is adapted so that the thermal expansion of the ring is substantially equal to that of the aluminum disk at the position of contact between the two. A washer interposed between ring and flange allows the ring to move freely relative to the flange. During thermal cycling, the ring and disk move at the same rate at the point of contact, the ring ensuring that the disks remain concentric with the hub throughout the range of disk file operating temperatures.

Abstract: HEAD SUPPORT ARM AND HEAD/ARM ASSEMBLIES FOR DISK FILES A cantilever head support arm for a disk file comprises a flat beam structure and a means of damping the structure against out-of-plane vibrations. The damping means comprises a rigid side bar extending along one longitudinal edge of the beam structure and a layer of compliant damping material connecting the beam structure and side bar together. Relative motion between the beam structure and side bar causes elastic shear deformation of the damping layer to absorb the energy of vibration.

Abstract: LIMITED ANGLE ELECTRIC ROTARY ACTUATOR FOR OPERATING MAGNETIC READING HEAD An electric rotary actuator, for producing rotation through a limited angle, comprises an internal stator having a common cylindrical surface around which is disposed a plurality of circumferentially spaced magnetic pole faces. A flux return means, together with the stator, forms a circuit that includes a magnetic flux gap of annular cross-section between the pole faces and the flux return means. An external non-magnetic cylindrical shell rotor, having an electrically conductive winding, is co-axially located in the flux gap, the winding comprising a number of loop coils arranged edgewise in a more or less continuous cylindrical structure so that each pair of axially extending portions of adjacent coils lies opposite a respective one of the pole faces. The stator comprises a number of axially extending permanent magnet segments the outer faces of which define the common cylindrical surface of the stator, and a central magnetically permeable core on which magnet segments are mounted; the flux return means comprising a cylindrical shroud surrounding the loop coils; and the shroud being slotted between magnet segments.
