Abstract: 1,051,329. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Nov. 13, 1964 [Dec. 20, 1963], No. 46261/64. Heading B6F. In a typewriter in which characters are arranged around a cylindrical shell 5 which is axially and rotatively moved to select a character and which cylinder is swung to effect impression, an anvil 3 with a projection 4 is provided inside the shell to concentrate the mass directly behind the character to be printed and so permit the shell to be light in weight. The anvil 3 is attached to the upper end of a tube 2 secured to a tilting base 1 mounted on a carriage. Inside the tube slides an actuating shaft 10 to which the type shell 5 is removably attached by a locating stud 13 and nut 11. The lower end of shaft 10 is rotatively secured in a two-way thrust bearing 16 so that, when the type-shell is being axially set by tube 14, rack 18, pinion 19 and pulley 24, the shaft 10, which is flattened at the very bottom, may also be selectively rotated by a slotted collar 27, tube 26 and a pulley 28. Type - carriage; letter - spacing platen.- Although described in regard to a type-cylinder mounted for travel across a platen the cylinder may be transversely fixed and the platen movable in letter-spacing direction. Aligning for impression.-As the cylinder 5 is being tilted for impression it is locked and aligned in printing position by a ball 34, Fig. 7, which is cammed into a hole 30 by a cam 33 on an actuator 32 sliding in a slot 35 in the anvil 3. In an alternative arrangement the actuator is formed with a wedge which engages in the shell. Uniformity of impression; disposition of character on rotary type-member.-As shown in Fig. 5 the characters with the largest printing areas are positioned on the lower-part of the cylinder, since as the cylinder has to be raised to move these characters into printing position, the moment of inertia of the cylinder is then at its greatest. Type-cylinder construction.-The type-cylinder 5 is thin walled, it is made of metal or plastic or formed with a very thin steel shell on its inner side and a moulded plastic member on its outer side. Case-shift.-Case-shift is effected by a special movement of the cylinder to shift it axially to one half or the other as shown in Fig. 5, or to rotate it 180 degrees as in Fig. 6 (not shown).

Abstract: 1,100,168. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS CORPORATION. 30 June, 1966 [29 July, 1965], No. 29378/66. Addition to 930,475. Heading B6F. The selective printer described in the parent Specification 930,475 is modified in that the character selection slides 75, Fig. 3, of the printer, which is adapted for control by record tapes having a seven bit code, are provided with extensions having coded openings 97, whereby the slides are formed into three groups a particular group being selected prior to actuation of a key 71 by depression of one of group keys 94, 95, 96 such that e.g. depression of group key 94 permits sliding of slides in group 91 only whilst groups 92, 93 are arrested. In operation depression of a group key 94, 95, 96 and subsequent depression of a character selection key 71 causes a spring lever associated with the key to unlatch a stop member 72 to penetrate openings 77 in slides 75. Stop member 72 also operates bail 81 which rocks latch 83 to permit lever 84 to follow the movement of spring biased slides 75 which close respective switches 78 the latter being associated with electromagnets 60 of the character selection mechanism 40, 50 Fig. 1. Mechanism 40 effects rotation of a type cylinder 10 through pivotal levers 21, pulleys 23 and cable 24. Mechanism 50 effects sliding movement of type cylinder 10 through pivotal lever, pulley and cable device 30. Energization of one or more electromagnets 60 of one or both selector mechanisms 40, 50, causes the respective armatures 67 to be actuated to enable one-revolution clutches 65, 66 and drive gears 62 meshing with slidable gears 61. Ends of gears are associated with cam pairs 51 having axially extending lobes the axial length of which varies in binary progression so as to pivot levers such as 21 through corresponding amounts. A cycle cam (not shown) restores bail 81 by an electromagnet 86, Fig. 3; an electromagnet 85 restoring lever 84. Alignment for impression.-Following character selection the levers such as 21, Fig. 3, are locked by a pawl 27 engaging a respective tooth 26 of a connecting rod 25. Key interlocks.-Levers of group keys 94, 95, 96 are provided with lugs 94c, 95c, 96c which are engaged by levers 94b, 95b, 96b. Only one key can be depressed at a time in that the lugs cam away the levers prior to engagements with their associated levers which are mounted on a common bail 98.
