[Also in Group XIX] In a circuit for decreasing the frequency of a 30 mc/s signal steadily by 4 kc/s per milli-second over a period of 3 milli-seconds, a variable reactance triode 63 forms part of the tank circuit of a Clapp oscillator, the output of which is fed to three doubling stages 50, 51, 52. Oscillation is initiated by a negative signal on a control lead 57, and as a result conduction in the triode is decreased and the frequency of the oscillator lowered. The circuit is described as part of a spin-echo storage system (.see Group XIX).

    Abstract: 816,659. Electric digital-data-storage apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 23, 1955 [Dec. 30, 1954], No. 36928/55. Class 106 (1). In a device for storing data by the spin-echo technique (stimulated or mirror echoes) a plurality of words are entered in succession into a sample (water) and each word, as it is entered, is labelled by a variation of the inhomogeneity of the polarizing field, in such a way that any one of the words can be selectively read-out from the sample. As described a plurality of sets of coils 1, 2, 3, Fig. 2, are positioned around the sample, thus permitting a large number of different variations to be made to the inhomogeneity of the polarizing field by energizing them either singly or in combination or for different durations. Two examples of the storing and selective recovery of two words are shown in Fig. 4, using stimulated echoes. Each word is preceded by a pre-pulse and also by a labelling pulse of inhomogeneity varying current I. In the first example, Figs. 4B, 4C, the current I passes through a first set of coils, say coils 1, Fig. 2, for the first word and through a second set, say coils 2, for the second word. Once entered, the words can be selectively read out by applying first a recollection pulse and then a current I through a selected one of the two sets of coils. Thus to read out the second word a current is passed through the coils 2. In the second example, Figs. 4D, 4E, the several different variations in the polarizing field areproduced by currents of different durations in only one set of coils.

    Abstract: An electroluminescent device is used to produce a scanning beam of radiation. Fig. 2 shows an equivalent circuit of the device which may be a composite semi-conductor device (Fig. 1, not shown) having gallium arsenide or phosphide type light emitting sources 29, producing the scanning beam. The operation of the circuit of Fig. 2 is described with reference to its function in investigating a radiation pattern 64 (see Division G1). In this investigation, a signal is produced through amplifier 50 at terminal 52 representing the radiation falling on the detectors 29A-29F, which are made effective repetitively in sequence by feeding in signals from source 54 to give a repetitive scanning of the radiation pattern. In operating the device to emit radiation, the devices 29A-29F, now light-emitting sources, are made effective in sequence by means of source 54, but the amplifier 50 is used to vary the brightness of the emission by varying the current through the sources 29A-29F. The construction of the semi-conductor device is described in detail (see Division H1). The sequential activation of the sources 29A-29F is produced by the connection of the respective sources, through control diodes 28A-28F to two voltage gradients 46, 48, which can be varied by a sweep or sinusoidal signal from generator 54. The back-biasing on the diodes 28A-28F which normally prevents activation of the sources 29, is removed in sequence by this variation.
