Abstract: In a rotating head magnetic tape transport, the tape is maintained stationary as the head sweeps a selected data track. A length of tape is buffered in a vacuum column between a supply spool and the rotating head station. A take-up spool on the opposite side of the head station is servo controlled to maintain proper head/track alignment and to periodically step the tape to an adjacent track. Changes in the tape radius on the take-up spool are compensated for by (1) a stop-lock source of motor energization whose magnitude is servo controlled by unbalance between the vacuum column force tending to pull the tape in one direction and the take-up spool motor torque tending to pull the tape in the opposite direction, and (2) a step modification network which responds to head/track alignment error caused by the variable tape radius on the take-up spool.

Abstract: TRANSVERSE TRACK LOCATION A track or stripe tape positioner for a helical scan or rotary head recorder uses digital techniques. The expected step size is preset into a counter. During the next phase, a calibration phase, the tape is stepped through a plurality of stripes whereat the present value is adjusted to measured values. In the third phase, the average step size is maintained subject to certain averaged changes thus providing a high degree of noise rejection to ensure reliable incremental stepping of a record tape through the recorder.

Abstract: ADAPTIVE GAIN CONTROL IN AN INCREMENTING MAGNETIC TAPE TRANSPORT In a rotating head magnetic tape transport, the tape is maintained stationary as the head sweeps a selected data track. A length of tape is buffered in a vacuum column between a supply spool and a rotating head station. A take-up spool on the opposite side of the head station is controlled by minimizing the overshoot or undershoot of the motor driving the take-up spool as the radius of the amount of tape on the spool increases or decreases (i.e., change). After a step operation, the overshoot or undershoot of the motor is measured and compared with a reference range to determine if the undershoot or overshoot is within the reference range. If the measured quantity is within the reference range, no adjustment is made. If the measured quantity is outside of the reference range, the gain of the take-up motor is adjusted.

Abstract: In a magnetic recording device skew between data tracks, recorded on a length of magnetic media, and a magnetic transducer is corrected dynamically by a close loop controlled servo system. When the magnetic transducer is not in transducing relationship with the magnetic media, an offset number is placed into a stop/lock counting means. The stop/lock counting means is one of the elements which is positioned in the close loop of the servo system. The stop/ lock counting means outputs a series of pulses as the offset number is decremented. The pulses are converted to analog voltages which, in turn, energize a motor which rotates a take-up spool (capstan) on which the media is wound passing said magnetic transducer. Due to the translation of said media, whenever the count in the stop/lock counting means is zero, the magnetic transducer is positioned in registry with the selected data track on the magnetic media. Abstract: FAST EMULATOR USING SLOW PROCESSOR Software driven controller emulator includes hardware apparatus for emulating the controller at a speed faster than the software driven emulator, incorporating means for predicting a next event to be emulated and preactivating dedicated logic to emulate the controller driving the next event. In case of errors, the hardware controller sets a code signal and returns emulation to the software driven emulator for error recovery identified by the code signal. BO987003
