    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically discriminate information in which a viewer of a television is interested by providing a processor to generate an identifier related to an information segment to be constituted by performing processing and including an information processor as a part of an information stream for the television output in the information segment.
    SOLUTION: A communication signal is received and a transport stream is generated by a TCD:120. The transport stream is multiplexed, separated, individual information streams 185 are generated, and addresses of respective streams are compared with an address of the TCD:120 by a demultiplexer. When the addresses coincide, the selected information stream 185 is transmitted to a proper device by a selector. The identifiers regarding the information streams 185 are generated by an information processor and the processor in the TCD:120. The identifiers are compared with one another, and when the information stream 185 in which the viewer is interested is found, an instruction is given to the selector to select one or plural information streams 185 by a profile sub-system.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for a television viewer to identify and selectively view the information stream of a television system and a part of it. SOLUTION: This television companion device(TCD) is provided with a communication transceiver capable of receiving signals from a television receiver 102 provided with one or plural types of information separated from broadcasting signals received by the television receiver 102 and output for presenting the one or plural segments of the one or plural types of the information. The device enables the individual viewing of the information especially selected for the individual. Also, the device transmits one or plural messages to a television by the communication transceiver and thus, can be provided with input capable of transmitting the request of obtaining the information by the viewer to the television or transmitting the message to the other television companion device.

SOLUTION: This device includes a television receiver in which each information type has a segment and a television transmitter for transmitting a transmission signal to a television companion device. A television 100 displays contents to a general audience 65 and communicates with plural television companion devices(TCD) 120 by way of communication links 109 and 121. The television 100 has to perform selection for the general audience 65 but a stream 185 for an individual audience 65 can be selected by the television 100 or the TCD 120. When the stream 185 is selected, the stream 185 for the general audience 65 is outputted onto the television 100. The stream 185 selected for the individual audience 65 is transmitted to the TCD 120.

    Abstract: An improved television is capable of demultiplexing, selecting and distributing information streams of different types of information to the television and to one or more television companion devices (TCDs). The television has a television antenna for receiving a broadcast signal having one or more types of information. Each information type has one or more segments. The television further has a transmitter for transmitting a communication signal to one or more television companion devices. The types of information can include any one or more of the following: a video channel, an audio channel, a data channel, one or more graphical images, and/or one or more animated images. The segments can include any one or more of the following: an audio clip or audio program, a video segment or video program, a still image, animation, graphics, 3D images, and/or a stream of text. The television communicates with the TCDs via a communication link. When the television communicates with the TCDs, it embeds an address into the message which identifies one or more of the TCDs to be the recipient of the message. Information streams and segments which are to be output by the television and/or one or more TCDs are selected by a selector that selects two or more segments from one or more of the types of information where one or more of the segments is displayed, e.g. on the television, and one or more of the segments are transmitted to one or more television companion devices. In an alternative embodiment, if the automatic selection of information is desired, a Profile Subsystem which contains a profile of profile items in a database of information of interest to the viewer will control selection of one or more of the segments if the segments contain one or more profile items.

The Information Processor will generate identifiers from the processed segments and the identifiers will then be used by the Profile Subsystem to control the selection of information streams.
