Abstract: In a tape cassette or cartridge player, cassette locking is activated by cassette insertion. Unlocking is activated by a release button. The cassette is held in a cassette receiving well by two pivoted holddowns on opposite ends of the well. Clamping force is provided by placing a moment about the pivot point of the two holddowns. This moment is created by typing the two holddowns together with a flexible media and placing the media in tension. A spring-urged pivoted link supplies the tension and cooperates with cassette insertion and ejection mechanism for respectively pivoting the holddowns into cassette retention and release positions.

Abstract: Two spacially cooperating rotary transformer windings are supported with accurate mechanical separation by a thrust gas bearing having a fixed position hydrostatic gas bearing member and a movable piston which integrally carries a movable hydrostatic gas bearing member. One transformer winding is carried by the fixed bearing member. The other cooperating transformer winding is supported by a headwheel. This headwheel is air bearing supported by the opposing forces supplied by the fixed and the movable bearing members, respectively. Dimensional manufacturing and operating tolerance is accomodated by movement of the piston, to thereby accurately maintain a desired mechanical spacing between the two transformer windings.

Abstract: TORSIONAL ACTUATOR FOR LOADING AND UNLOADING FLEXIBLE DISK DRIVE A torsional actuator is disclosed for loading and unloading a flexible disk drive. The actuator includes a torsion beam having a biasing arm and a plurality of actuating arms extending therefrom with the free ends of the actuating arms being separately engageable with different ones of the collet, pressure pad and recording head arm of the flexible disk drive. The arms of the actuator are configured to enable selective and sequential movement of the collet, pressure pad and/or recording head arm in one direction toward a disk within the drive to establish a loaded, or operational) position and in the opposite direction away from a disk within the drive to establish an unloaded, or disk accessing, position with such positioning being determined by a force applying cam engageable with the actuator.

Abstract: TWO STAGE COLLETING IN A FLEXIBLE DISK DRIVE Two stage colleting is disclosed for a flexible disk drive. Precise registration of a floppy disk within a disk cartridge with respect to the spindle and recording head of a disk drive is achieved by first positioning the cartridge with respect to the collet, and then aligning the collet with respect to the spindle axis as the collet is moved toward the spindle. This two stage colleting is made possible by use of a collet shaft having two different diameters with the larger diameter being adjacent to the collet during positioning of the cartridge with respect to the collet and with the smaller diameter being adjacent to the collet to allow movement of the collet in a direction normal to the spindle axis during alignment of the collet with respect to the spindle axis.

Abstract: FLEXIBLE DISK DRIVE OPTIMIZED FOR AUTOMATED MANUFACTURE A flexible disk drive is disclosed that is optimized for automated manufacture. The critical elements of the disk drive are divided into two functional groups, one of which includes the elements for loading and unloading the disk cartridge and the other of which includes the elements for reading and writing on the flexible disk within the cartridge, with the elements of each group being precisely registered with respect to one another on separate frame members. The frame members are coarsely registered with respect to one another and snapped together, after separate assembly of at least most of the elements on the separate frame members has been completed, and fine position registration of the flexible disk to the spindle is thereafter achieved during each loading operation of a flexible disk into the assembly disk drive by collet centering and clamping the disk to the spindle. By this arrangement, automated methods of manufacture can be effectively carried out for assembly of each frame member as well as final assembly of the frame members.

Abstract: A sheet registration apparatus for positioning sheets in a registered position on a work surface such as the document platen of a convenience copier/ duplicator machine. The apparatus includes a bidirectional servo-controlled sheet transport for conveying the sheet over the work surface. A sheet sensing device is disposed within the path of sheet travel A controller monitors the sensing device and activates a position control routine following the occurrence of a predetermined level change in the signal generated by the sensing device. At the end of the position control routine, the transport is stopped thereby positioning the sheet in the registration zone. The apparatus enables sheet registration for a machine operating in a duplex and/or simplex mode. The apparatus further enables registration at any point on the document platen.

Abstract: A tape-containing cassette facilitates interchange between low-speed recording systems and high-speed or high-performance recording systems. In a low-performance system, the tape is transported wholly within the cassette. The cassette may be removed from a low-performance player and placed in a high-performance player. Then, the tape is partially removed from the cassette for higher speed transport. A front wall opening of the cassette includes a pair of movable front wall end plates. The end plates partially covering the front wall opening facilitate in-the-cassette tape processing. Moving the two end plates to a nonclosure position clears the entire front wall opening to facilitate removing the tape from the cassette for out-of-the-cassette tape processing.
