In passing from a reel 10 to a capstan 27, tape 30 traverses a vacuum column 18 of the variable-force type in which the force on a tape loop 24 varies with the position of the loop in the column so that an equilibrium position may be attained without the use of a servo system, and a unidirectional torque is imparted to the reel 10 in a sense to tend to withdraw the tape from the capstan 27. The reel 10 and column 18 are balanced on the opposite side of the capstan 27 by a similar reel 11 and column 19 containing a head 35 which is pivoted to facilitate tape loading. Constant-torque motors 12, 13 drive the reels 10, 11, and a vacuum source (40, Fig. 2) is connected selectively to the capstan 27 and a brake 28 as well as continuously to ports 20, 21 and slots 36, 37 in the walls of the columns 18, 19, which are of tapered form.
