Abstract: A method, program and system to provide incentives for client machines to contribute resources to a peer-to-peer computer network are provided. When a server receives requests for information from a plurality of client machines , it determines if the client machines are contributing resources to peer-to- peer sharing. When answering requests, clients which contribute resources to peer-to-peer sharing are given priority over client which do not contribute. In another embodiment of the present invention, a further incentive is provided to clients which contribute to peer-to-peer sharing, by giving high er priority to client requests in proportion to the level of resources contributed.

Abstract: A method, program and system for distributing information in a computer network are provided. The invention comprises dividing an electronic file in to a plurality of pieces and then downloading a file piece to the first client machine to request that file piece. If a second client machine requests the same file piece, the request is redirected to the first client. The first client then functions as a peer-to-peer server and downloads the requested file piece to the second client.

Abstract: Synchronizing copies of a first document in a distributed computing environment. According to a preferred embodiment, a path to a preferred repository for the first document and a path to a master repository for the first document are embedded in a second document. A copy of the first document is retrieved from the preferred repository. The master repository is checked to determine whether the retrieved copy is a copy of a most recent version of the first document. In response to the determination that the retrieved copy is the most recent version of the first document, the second document is formatted using the retrieved copy.

Abstract: A nonvolatile random access memory is attached to a write back cache. In the case of a power loss (502), the cache is written to the nonvolatile memory (506) before the machine completely loses power. This may be accomplished by providing a power storage device for use in the event of a power loss. On restart, the contents of the nonvolatile memory are written to the write back cache (514) before any new information may be written. The data may then be written from the cache to the storage device as was intended before the power loss.

Abstract: Multiple links within a document (eg web page) to a source file (containing eg. a further document, an advertising banner) in a distributed computing environment (eg internet) facilitates auto synchronisation of distributed versions of a file and faster initial loading. Within a given document (eg. web page) at least two reference links (eg urls) are given for an embedded file. One link is directed to a preferred repository (eg fastest server), whilst the other link is to a master repository which contains an up to date version of the file. An application (eg browser) will check the local cache for a file matching the respective links if no such file is found an attempt to load the file from the preferred repository is made if this fails alternative repositories (if listed) and then the master repository are tried. If the file has been retrieved from any location bar the master repository the application, once idling, checks the version of the file against that held on the master repository. With this system Logos and advertisements may quickly be downloaded and displayed from a local cache or the preferred server and then checked at a latter time against those on master server.
