Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device, a reading channel, a magnetic tape drive, and service rendering device and method, capable of reducing the distortion of a reading signal from a magneto-resistive reading head. SOLUTION: A reading signal is supplied to a reading channel equipped with an analog-digital converter and a digital equalizer. A digital peak measuring device is configured to sense the output of the digital equalizer and to supply the average positive and negative peak values of the outputs. A controller is configured to repeatedly determine the asymmetry of the peak values in response to the peak values, to estimate the cancellation slope and the cancellation term relation of the asymmetry, to repeatedly estimate a converged cancellation term from the measured asymmetry and the estimated cancellation slope, and to feedback the converged cancellation term to change the digital reading signal regarding the input of the digital equalizer thereby converging the asymmetry to substantially 0.
