A drawer 5 having a matrix of storage cells 6 is associated with a pneumatic selection system comprising ducts 46 which are movable parallel to the columns of cells 6 by actuators 15-17, and a set of valves 43-45, also movable parallel to the columns of cells by an actuator 18 so as to connect any selected duct 46 in any position with output channel 14. Drawer 5 is movable by five positions on either side of the home position along the row direction to associate one of eleven columns with each duct 46. The ducts 46 are arranged in groups of five along the columns and are movable by actuators 15-17 into +1, 0 or -1 positions, valves 43-45 similarly being movable into the +1, 0 or - 1 position. Each duct has a through passage 47 on either side of it so that the drawer 5, ducts 46 and valves 43- 45 may be moved to provide a through passage from a cell 6 to output channel 14 when the appropriate one of valves 43-45 is opened. Other drawers may be provided below drawer 5, columns of empty cells 8-10 providing through passages for selection from the lower drawers.

    Abstract: Plural accessing means selectively store and fetch articles, preferably document-containing articles, from one of a large plurality of storage compartments. Transition zones are established between adjacent accessing means for facilitating transferring articles between assigned accessing zones. Such array of storage compartments is zoned for facilitating program control of article handling. In a preferred form, magnetic recording tape is stored in small, easily transportable cartridges including 1/2 inch tape reels, for example, selectively accessed by two or more X-Y carriages and exchanged with one or more magnetic tape or article-processing stations. The exchange may include cartridge staging between a low-performance and a high-performance library system. Control means prevent the plurality of accessing means from interfering one with the other. The latter can be either mechanically or programmed effected.
