Abstract: IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO DATA ENTRY APPARATUS A data entry apparatus is described in which tabbing can be performed normally in one mode to enter tables row by row or vertically in another mode to enter tables column by column. In the particular embodiment described, data to be displayed on a screen are held in a recirculating memory used to refresh the screen. Tab stops are held in a shift register driven in synchronism with the recirculating memory. When the tab key on a keyboard is depressed, the cursor is displayed at the next tab stop to the right on the same line. When a coded tab key is depressed, the cursor is displayed on the next line at the nearest tab stop to the left. A tab character is displayed whenever the tab key (normal or coded) is operated. Abstract: Keyboard apparatus includes a keyboard having dead-keys which enable accented characters to be entered. A store preferably read only, is divided into a number of sections, each sections containing character codes representingaccented or non-accented characters associated with that section. When a dead key is activated, this addresses a section of the store associated with that dead-key to access the address of the section containing the characters with are accented with the accents associated with that dead key: activation of the next key causes accessing of the accented character code within that section. Different accents can be associated with different dead keys. Optionally the store can be arranged to store only validly-accented characters, thus avoiding the entry of invalidly-accented characters. Non-accented characters are normally accessed from a single section of the store. Common accented characters do not require dead-key operation.

Abstract: Keyboard apparatus is described in which a keyboard having dead-keys to enable accented characters to be entered is claimed. A storage means, preferably of read only type, is divided into a number of sections; each section contains character codes representing accented or non-accented characters associated with that section. When a given dead key is activated, this addresses a section of the store associated with that dead-key to access the section containing the characters which are accented with the accents associated with that dead key. Activation of the next character key causes accessing of the code for an accented character within that section. Different accents for the same or other characters can be associated with different dead keys. Optionally the store can be arranged to store only validly-accented characters, thus avoiding the entry of invalidly-accented characters. Non-accented characters are normally accessed from a single section of the store. Common accented characters do not require dead-key operation.

Abstract: Text processing apparatus comprises a keyboard, a video display and a message buffer containing text to be displayed. When a word is too long to be contained on a display line, it automatically overspills and will form the first word on the next line. The mechanism for doing this includes a word boundary counter which keeps track of the starts of words as they appear in the message buffer. This also allows such features as word underscore and word delete to be performed.

Abstract: A communications control unit, integrated into a processor, enables lines and modems to be changed or replaced by different types of lines and modems without changing the control unit hardware. A common modem adapter design can be used in the control unit for different data rates. A processor microprogram and a simple control unit local microprogram (dynamically changeable during the transfer of data) obviate the need for different adapters for each line and modem type. Both microprograms cooperate to control data transfer.
