Abstract: A magnetic disk, particularly of the thin flexible type, has a magnetic head traversing the disk in order to come into registry with various concentric tracks on the disk. An electric motor of the stepping type is mechanically connected with the head for so moving the head, and a "present track number" counter is so electrically connected with the stepping motor as to keep track of the particular magnetic track on which the head is located. On a certain contingency, such as a cessation of power to the system, the circuitry includes components so connected as to cause the stepping motor to move the magnetic head to an outer limit on the disk, outwardly of a prerecorded reference track on the disk. When this point is reached, a switch is actuated by the movement of the head, and connected circuitry causes the head to move back onto the reference track. When a maximum amplitude is detected by the head due to passage over the reference track, the circuitry includes components that reset the content of the "present track number" counter to zero; and all of the inner tracks within the reference track are counted from the zero count in the "present track number" counter, so as to thereby compensate for any changes in dimension of the magnetic disk.

Abstract: The specification describes an assembly of a pair of magnetic transducers (400) held substantially in contact with opposite sides of a flexible magnetic disk wherein each transducer has a pair of disk contacting lands (404,406) each broadening from the leading edge (404b) to the trailing edge (404c), with the leading edge (404b) and side edge (404d) of each land being gradually blended into the surrounding active surface of the transducer and with the trailing edge (404c) of the land being sharp. A first one (404) of the lands of each transducer has a read/write magnetic gap (28U) in it, and in use (this land is located opposite the second land (not having the read/write gap in it) of the other transducer, the second land being wider than the first land in each case. The centres of the opposing lands are in alignment, the centres being located on a plane passing through the read/write gaps of the transducers,

Abstract: A suspension assembly for a magnetic transducer head 150V includes a normally flat gimbal spring 308 in the form of a figure eight, with a pair of tabs or ears 308G at the sides of the eight by means of which the spring is mounted in a support arm 104V. A backup spring, 310 has legs 310D and 310E extending from a mounting side of a hole in the arm 104V towards the other side. Legs 310F and 310G extend back again and connect to a depending leg 310H and flange portion 3101 effective to provide pressure on the middle of the gimbal spring 308. The backup spring 310 provides resilient backup force against translation of the transducer head on its main axis and the gimbal spring 308 provides resilience against transducer pitching and rolling.
