Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assist various data memory formats to efficiently designate positions of, read, write user data stored on a magnetic tape. SOLUTION: A tape 400 is formatted by writing many segment headers 408-411 irrespective of interleave accessing of user data. The adjoining segment headers are spaced by a predetermined distance and many data memory segments are set. Every segment header includes a proper key 408c. The proper key 408c is copied to a key index so as to identify an effective segment. After the formatting, the tape can be accessed in a general manner. A new formatting method is secured by writing a new segment header to the tape without erasing an old header or data.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently specify a position of a user data stored on the magnetic tape medium and to assist the read and write of the data by various data storage format. SOLUTION: The tape 400 is formatted by writing a large number of segment headers 408 to 411, irrespective of interleaving access of the user data. The adjacent segment headers are separated from each other by a prescribed space to settle a large number of data storage segments. Every segment header includes an intrinsic key 408. This intrinsic key is copied in a key index for the purpose of discriminating an effective segment. After formatting, usual tape access can be executed. A new formatting system can be established by writing new segment headers on a tape without erasing old headers or data.
